For UA students, this is the last day of classes, but for the Arizona track and field teams, this is just the beginning - the beginning of four grueling weeks of championship competitions.

Action begins Friday with the Pacific 10 Conference Combined Events Championships hosted by the Wildcats at Drachman Stadium.

Junior heptathletes Amanda Underwood and Jessica Corkill are prepared to represent Arizona in the women's heptathlon. Every Pac-10 school will be in attendance, with the exception of Oregon State, which does not have a track and field program.

"For me personally, this is the first opportunity I've had to compete in the heptathlon," Corkill said. "This will be my opening time competing in it, so it's going to be exciting and fun. It will be climatic for me.

"(Amanda and I are) both going to into it with high expectations and (we are going to) put everything out there. It's a championship meet; the best of the best qualify to go onto NCAA (Championships). The Pac-10 is the beginning of our championships, and it's all about using everything you learned all year long and making it count."

UA head coach Fred Harvey has confidence in the duo.

"We feel really good," Harvey said. "We really feel (good) in Amanda's situation. She just had a couple of nice personal bests in her events - the hurdles and javelin, which sets her up well.

"With Jessica we are just going to have fun," Harvey added. "To put her in the Pac-10 Championships situation, we have to go into it a little more lighthearted. But our expectations are still high for her."

The competition resumes May 14 with the Pac-10 Championships, also held at Drachman Stadium. From there, the Wildcats travel to Northridge, Calif., for the NCAA West Regional Championships beginning May 28. The Arizona teams will then close out the season at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Austin, Texas, which run June 9-12.
