'Cats claw to the top of the pile
Wildcats upset Long Beach to advance furthest since 1986 national champ team
Consider the torch officially passed.
It is fitting that former Wildcat head coach Jerry Kindall, serving as a color commentator on ESPN2, announced the game that brought the Arizona baseball team back into the Men's College World Series.
Arizona's 2-1 Super Regional win means that with 15 appearances, the UA is tied with Stanford for the seventh-most CWS appearances.

Game 1: Cats battle back from run deficit
After Long Beach State jumped out to 5-0 lead, the Wildcats rallied, scoring four runs in the ninth to win the opener 6-5.
Sophomore catcher Nick Hundley opened up the UA scoring with a solo home run in the 7th off of national player of the year, junior pitcher Jered Weaver.
In the ninth, sophomore left fielder Trevor Crowe drove in sophomore third baseman Brad Boyer for the winning run. Boyer, in because of an injury to junior second baseman John Hardy, had two RBIs as well.

Wildcats battle Bulldogs to open CWS
Arizona baseball head coach Andy Lopez will face a familiar foe in Georgia when opening the Men's College World Series.
In his seven years at Florida, Lopez became familiar with Bulldogs head coach David Perno.
"I know them very well, I know the coach very well, he's a dear friend, dear friends with me and I was in that conference for seven years obviously," Lopez said.
In addition, Perno was on UGA's national championship team in 1990.

Football recruit's death not linked to heat
Incoming freshman football player McCollins Umeh's death may have been due to an enlarged heart, but was not heat-related, according to the initial autopsy report from the Pima County Medical Examiner's Office.
More information will not be available for at least two weeks and could take 6-8 weeks, UAPD Sergeant Eugene V. Mejia said.
According to the American Heart Association website, an enlarged heart is an increase in the size of the heart detected by "physical examination, X-ray or other imaging tests," which can be caused by the thickening of the heart muscle because of increased work load.

Sports Briefs
Cheseret wins 5,000- meter championship
With a national championship in the 5,000 meters, sophomore Robert Cheseret led the Arizona men's track and field team to its best finish in four years.
The Wildcat men finished 12th with 21 points while the women finished 65th with two points at the NCAA track and field outdoor championships.
Cheseret won the 5 K with a time of 13:49.85, beating Colorado sophomore Dathan Ritzenhein by just under three seconds. Cheseret also finished second in the 10,000 meters, earning 18 of the UA's points.
