University Blvd. stores set short summer hours

Three fast-food businesses on University Boulevard are still open and thriving in their first summer on campus.

La Salsa, Jimmy John's and the Pita Pit are brand new to the campus area this year and are still doing business over the summer.

"It's been a better summer than we predicted," said Chris Wright, owner and operator of Jimmy John's.

The businesses plan for the summer months to be slow so the lack of business doesn't hurt them.

"We did so great after second semester that we had a good little nest egg for the summer," Wright said.

The businesses have also planned for the lull by establishing summer hours of operation, cutting down on the expense of having people working, but not serving food. La Salsa closes a half an hour earlier moving their closing time from 11 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

"Certainly the patterns of businesses are less predictable," said Ron Yaeli, principal managing partner of all the La Salsas in Tucson.

"The summer is more challenging than the school year," he said. "You just need to adapt.

Jimmy John's, which is usually open from 10:30 a.m. to 3 a.m., now closes at 10 p.m. every night.

The Pita Pit is open until midnight Sunday through Wednesday and stays open until 3 a.m. Thursday through Saturday because of the bar patrons from other businesses.

"There's still enough people coming through that it doesn't hurt us at all," said Jamie Mulligan, Pita Pit manager.

The Pita Pit was a little apprehensive about the summer but they are doing better than expected.

"Everyone tried to scare us about the summer but we're doing really well actually," Mulligan said.

The summer gives the businesses the chance to participate in a large coordination of all Main Gate businesses, which offers free and discounted meals to students participating in orientation.

"We are giving discounts to all the kids and parents that participate," Yaeli said.

The summer will definitely not cause too much of a decrease in revenue for these businesses.

"We're not going to close or anything," Wright assured.
