Like a big pizza pie? Try these.

Best place to get a slice that's bigger than your head

Mama's Famous Pizza and Heros, 4500 E. Speedway Blvd.

You'll have to travel a bit farther these days to get to Mama's - there used to be a location across from the main gate - but if you need a ridiculously sized slice of New York-style pizza, it's still the place to go. Don't consider ordering an entire pie; consider whether you want to split a slice. The slices aren't too greasy, especially for NY style. The toppings are a bit sparse, but for less than $3 a slice, it's still a steal.

Runner up: Arizona Pizza Company, 5855 E. Broadway Blvd.

Best place for a pie with eggplant

Magpies Gourmet Pizza, 605 N. Fourth Ave.

Magpies is consistently named the best pizza joint in town by local newspapers, and I'm not going to disagree. Hearty sauce, bubbling cheese and any topping you can imagine. They've got nine kinds of cheese, pesto pizza and even soy alternative cheese for dairy haters. It's not a cheap pizza, but it's worth every penny when you want to taste some high-class pie. Instead of pizza and beer, this is a pizza and wine type of place.

Runner up: Picurro Pizzeria, 3011 E. Speedway Blvd.

Best place to get a pizza for spare change

Blackjack Pizza, 2505 N. Campbell Ave.

Blackjack Pizza will be in your face, letting you know how cheap their pizza is. Sometimes it'll be $5 for a one-topping; other times it'll be practically free. They'll have dorm specials and pizza wars with Domino's. They'll have consistently mediocre pizza, with flavorless toppings and almost no hint of sauce. But, hey, it will be totally cheap and at 2 in the morning after a night of partying, it all tastes great anyway.

Runner up: Domino's Pizza, Student Union Memorial Center.

Peter Piper Pizza

Old Chicago

Brooklyn Pizza Company, 534 N. Fourth Ave.

Some people think Brooklyn has the best pizza in Tucson. I personally think it's overrated. But we can all agree on one thing: they've got some amazing garlic knots. They've got greasy, NY-style pizza with good toppings, but they've really improved the traditional side of bread you can dip in marinara sauce. You always want to have a pizza appetizer that's pretty much identical to the main course, and these knots of bread with garlic are far superior to your run-of-the-mill breadsticks. They've also got a student discount that can drive down the price of a large to around $7.

Best place to get a slice between classes

No Anchovies, 870 E. University Blvd.

No Anchovies is the campus pizza joint. It's a great place for lunch, given that a couple slices and a soda won't set you back more than $6. They've got pepperoni and cheese, but they've also got a great buffalo chicken pizza and a pesto pizza with fresh mozzarella. If you like unique pies, this is the only place you'll be able to get a decent slice. It's also a great place to take people visiting the dorms.

Best place to get a hearty deep dish that requires a knife and fork

Zachary's Pizza, 1028 E. Sixth St.

Zachary's will pile on the toppings until you can't take it anymore. The heartiest pizza in Tucson is also the best, according to many. Although it's tough to find without much of a sign out front, it's worth it when you finally go, "Oh, seriously? It's been right across the street from campus the whole time?" It's also got one of the best beer selections in Tucson. It takes a little longer (about 30 minutes) to prepare your pizza, but it's worth the wait.

Runner up: Frog & Firkin, 874 E. University Blvd.

Best place to relive your childhood birthday parties

Peter Piper Pizza, 7119 E. Broadway Blvd.

Mmm ... cardboard. The pizza isn't the main attraction at Peter Piper, but, seriously, it's cheese, bread and tomato sauce, so it can't be bad. This is a great place to come for a night away from the fast college lifestyle. You can dominate some kids at video games, win some sweet plastic bracelets and get a pitcher of soda or beer.

Best place for pizza, wings and a ballgame

Chariot Pizza, 1835 S. Alvernon Way

Pizza is everywhere in Tucson, but it's hard to find a great pizza and wing joint. Chariot is the place, with spicy, meaty wings and some good thin-crust pizza. You can feel yourself gaining weight with every bite, but it's worth it when you get yourself some great ranch dressing to go with the pizza and wings.

Runner up: Old Chicago, 2960 N. Campbell Ave.
