Going on around Town

  • TOYS Theater, an internationally known Russian theater group, will kick off their 2003-200
  • season with a 7:00 p.m. performance at the Berger Performing Arts Center, 1200 W. Speedway Blvd. The troupe, which encourages audience interaction during their shows, uses humor to introduce Russian culture to their guests. Tickets are $25.00 for adults, $20 for students and seniors, $15.00 for children 3-12 years old, and free for children under three. See http://www.toystheater.com for more details or to buy tickets.

  • The historic Fox Theatre opens its doors for its annual Open House and Block Party on Sept. 20 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. The family-themed party includes tours of the theatre, including the balcony area, a live entertainment stage, a beer garden by Nimbus Brewery, assorted food vendors, and activities for the kiddies. The $5 per person admission fee helps to raise funds for the theatre's restoration. The Fox Theatre is located at 17 West Congress St. Call 624-1515 for information on the event.

  • Did you know that at this time of year, over 250 species of butterflies can be spotted in the Sonoran Desert? As summer draws to a close, revel in the flora and fauna one last time at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum's Butterfly Festival this weekend. Find out about our local butterflies, learn how to garden to attract butterflies, and purchase a plant or two to bring colorful butterflies to your own patio. There are plenty of activities for the whole family, from butterfly walks to face painting. The festivities run from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Sept. 20, and 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 a.m. on Sept. 21. Admission is $9 for adults, $2 for kids 6 ö12, and free for children under 6 years of age and Museum members. The Museum is located at 2021 N. Kinney Rd.   • The new Stevie Eller Dance Theatre will be officially dedicated on Sept. 19. Tours start at 5 p.m., and the formal ceremony follows at 6 p.m. The theatre is on the UA Mall, adjacent to the Ina Gittings building. For more information or to RSVP, call 621-9062.

  • It's UAPresents time again! The 2003-200
  • season of UAPresents, titled Our Shared Earth, begins on Sept. 20 with a day-long extravaganza. The event will celebrate African arts, and features dance performances in many musical styles, including hip-hop, West and East African dance, and Afro-Caribbean. The free festival will run from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m at Centennial Hall, 1020 E. University bl. For additional information, call 626-4420.

  • Also on Sept. 20, the Arizona State Museum will offer a free craft class, "Tile Traditions." The workshop, part of the Museum's Family Program Series, will be held from 1 p.m. to

  • Mars is closer to Earth than it has been for 60,000 years! Spend the afternoon with Mars at Flandrau Science Center, 1601 E. University Blvd. The planetarium show, narrated by Patrick Stewart, runs from 2:30 ö 3:30 p.m. Admission is $5.50 for adults, $4.50 for students, seniors and military, and $4.00 for children under 13.   • The UA Mall will gain four temporary new denizens on Sept. 22. "Border Dynamics," a group of four 900-pound steel sculptures commissioned by Beyond Borders: Binational Art Foundation, will take up residence on the UA Mall as part of the UA's celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.The film's director will be present for a discussion, for this showing only. On Sept. 23, a student reception will take place at noon, and the film will be shown again on Sept. 23 at 2:30 at the Gallagher Theater in the Student Union.   • Glasgow, Scotland's Mogwai will play at the Rialto Theatre on Sept. 18. The show starts at 8 p.m., and admission is $13. The Rialto Theatre is located at 318 E. Congress St.; call 798-3333 for more information.

  • The Psychobilly Southwest Tour bids you "Aloha from Hell!" If the sentiment appeals to you, check out the tour when it hits the Rialto Theatre, 318 E. Congress St., on Sept. 20. The show, featuring the HorrorPops, the Dragstrip Demons, Ripmen, and G-String, begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are $8; call 798-3333 for details.

  • Garage A Trois, featuring Charlie Hunter, Stanton Moore, Mike Dillon, and Sherik, join Bad Plus for an 8 p.m. show at the Rialto Theatre, 318 E. Congress St. Tickets are $15; for more information, call 798-3333.
