Late pick levels Cats
In their first game since the firing of former head coach John Mackovic, the Wildcats kept it close in Pullman for three quarters ÷ but once again fell short, losing 30-7 to No. 14 Washington State on Saturday.
Arizona pulled within six points of the Cougars midway through the third quarter and was trailing by just nine with under 10 minutes to go in the contest.
Two Wildcat miscues led to 14 Washington State points in the final nine minutes, making the score appear much more lopsided than the game was.

Volleyball drops to 0-5 in Pac-10
Slumping Cats swept at home, lose 5th straight
Arizona volleyball head coach Dave Rubio still believes the reeling Wildcats will get better. Of course, after five straight losses to open the Pacific 10 Conference season, there seems to be nowhere to go but up.
No. 9 Cal (14-0, 6-0 Pac-10) remained perfect by beating Arizona (6-9, 0-5) in straight sets. This defeat came a night after the UA fell to No. 4 Stanford (12-2, 6-0), 3-1.

Basketball puts stop to 'Madness'
UA officials have called for an end to the Madness.
For the first time since 1999, the UA men's basketball season will not open with the popular "Midnight Madness," the athletics department announced Friday. Replacing the fan-favorite event will be an intrasquad scrimmage, followed by a 45-minute autograph session at McKale Center on Saturday, Oct. 18.
In previous years, Midnight Madness has been the fans' first look at the new Wildcat squad. Past events have included slam-dunk contests, 3-point shootouts, scrimmages and fan-friendly promotions to introduce the team. Traditionally, the event is held at midnight on the first day that squads are permitted to practice as a team, with many schools holding festivities nationwide.

San Diego squelches soccer's comeback bid
Mallory Miller's fifth goal of the season couldn't help Arizona soccer from coming up short against the San Diego Toreros, 2-1 on Friday.
The loss marked the first time this season the Wildcats (4-5-1) did not out-shoot their opponents. The UA matched the Toreros (5-2-3) with nine shots.
Miller brought the Wildcats back into contention after Arizona fell behind 2-0. Miller's goal, in the 63rd minute, came after she directed a corner kick to sophomore forward Kelly Nelson, who then passed back to Miller for the score.
