Women's golf one shot back in Seattle

The Arizona women's golf team stands tied for second place after its second day of competition at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational in Seattle, Wash. after shooting a 16-over-par 592 yesterday.

Arizona trails second-round leader California by one stroke after the Golden Bears shot a 15-over-par 591. UCLA (592) is tied with Arizona at second. Southern California (601) occupies third place and Oregon holds fifth with a 36-over-par 612.

Individually, Arizona sophomore Erica Blasberg is tied for third after shooting a second-round 145 (+1) yesterday. The native of Corona, Calif. stood tied for 25th place after carding a 76 (+4) in the first round.

Junior Mar Garcia is tied at 5th place after shooting 2-over-par 146 in round two. Sophomore Whitney Welch is tied for 12th at 5-over-par 149. Sophomore Lani Elston is tied for 19th after shooting 8-over-par 152. Sophomore Cassandra Kirkland tied for 39th after shooting 12-over-par 156.

The Wildcats will tee off in today's final round beginning at 9:50 a.m. PST. The tournament is being played at Sahalee Country Club ÷ a par 72, 6,030-yard layout.

Men's golf finishes 37 shots off of lead

The UA men's golf team shot an 18-over-par 306 yesterday to finish in a tie for 12th place at the Windon Memorial Classic at North Shore Country Club in Glenview, Ill.

Shooting par continues to be a problem for the Wildcats, who managed just one even-par round on the day and totaled just three for the tournament en route to a 32-over-par 896 total over the event's 54 holes. Arizona finished 37 strokes behind tournament winner Minnesota, which topped the 17-team field with a 5-under 859 total.

Other than senior Chris Nallen, who carded an even-par 72 yesterday, no other Arizona golfer in the tournament was within five shots of par during the final 18 holes. Nallen's 72 enabled him to pick up his second top-20 finish of the season, a tie for 16th place at 219 (+3).

Teammate Nathan Lashley was the only other UA player to finish in the top half of the field. The junior from Scottsbluff, Neb., shot a final-round 78 to finish in a tie for 28th place at 223 (+7).

Also competing for the Wildcats were freshmen Nathan Tyler, Josh Esler and Henry Liaw. Tyler shot a final-round 79 to finish in a tie for 66th place at 229 (+13), while Esler tied for 69th place at 230 (+14). Liaw finished in 76th place with a three-round tally of 233 (+17).

Currently ranked 14th nationally, the team will be in action again next Monday and Tuesday at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate in Birmingham, Ala.
