Special Events

  • The Center for Creative Photography hosts an Open House for Family Weekend, on Friday from noon to 5 p.m. The exhibits are "Edward Weston: A Vision Conserved" and "Edward Weston and Margrethe Mather." All students and parents are welcome. Call 626-4054 for details.

  • The UA Museum of Art offers a free highlight tour of the museum's collection on Friday at 1 p.m., including the School of Art's annual faculty exhibition. Call 626-4054 for more information.

  • On Friday, students and parents are invited to tour the Steward Observatory mirror lab, where the world's largest and most powerful telescope mirrors are made. Admission is free, but photo ID and closed toe shoes are required. The lab is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Call 626-4054 for details.

  • No Family Weekend is complete without a murder, right? Bring the parents to the Student Union Memorial Center Grand Ballroom on Saturday to enjoy a delicious dinner while a theatrical murder mystery unfolds around you.   • Today the Poetry Center presents a panel discussion as part of the Visiting Poets and Writers Reading Series. The discussion takes place at 9:30 a.m. at UA Foundation, Room "Eyes to the Orient: Margrethe Mather and Edward Weston will be presented by Amy Conger. The slide lecture describes the impact of Asian culture on these two 20th century photographers. See the presentation at 5:30 at the Center for Creative Photography auditorium; call 621-7968 for details.

  • "The Lost Honor of Katarina Blum" is this week's installment of the German Film Series. The film deals with the unjust treatment of Blum, who unknowingly falls in love with a terrorist and is subsequently arrested. The film shows in Modern Languages Auditorium today at 7:30 p.m. Call 621-7385 for more information.

  • "Untrue Narratives" opens at the Lionel Rombach Gallery on Friday, with an opening reception at 5:30 p.m. The visual exhibition explores the truth and potential manipulation of photography as art. The gallery is located on campus at the southeast corner of Park Blvd. and Speedway Blvd. Call 626-4215 for details.

  • Joseph Williams will perform classical bass guitar for Fine Arts Friday, on Friday from noon to 1 p.m., in the UA Bookstore. Call 621-8475 for more information.

  • Meet Gail Wimmer, featured artist in this year's UA School of Art faculty exhibition, and over twenty other faculty artists at the UA Museum of Art tomorrow. This public reception lasts from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Reconstructing Memory, Wimmer's new exhibit of word-inspired art, opens Saturday. The museum's hours are Monday-Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday (closed on Saturday). Call 621-7567 for information on either event.

  • The Philharmonic Orchestra and Wind Ensemble will perform Friday as part of the School of Music & Dance 2003-04 concert season. The free performance begins at 7:30 p.m. at Crowder Hall, at the south end of the Speedway Blvd./Park Blvd. underpass. Call 621-2998 for details.

  • The Arizona State Museum's annual Open House, on Saturday, features the photography of Helga Teiwes, a well-known photographer of American Indian culture.   • Amy Goodman, host of Democracy Now! on KXCI Community Radio and Access Tucson television, will speak at Centennial Hall on Sunday. The speech begins at 8 p.m.; it is free, but donations are requested. There is a catered pre-speech reception to raise funds for KXCI and Access Tucson; tickets are $75 and are available at www.kxci.org.

  • Celebrate Dia de los Muertos early at Tohono Chul Park, 7366 N. Paseo del Norte. The exhibit will use sculpture, paintings, photography and other art media to symbolize the celebration and honoring of friends and family who have died. See the memorial altar and other art today from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, $3 for students, and $2 for children 5-12. Call 742-6455 for details.

  • It's time for the corn maze again! Buckelew Farm opens its 15th annual pumpkin festival and corn maze on Friday. Buy a pumpkin to carve, take a hayride, pick up some homestyle food, or wander through the four-mile-long corn maze. Buckelew Farm is at 17000 W. Ajo Way, 22 miles west of Tucson and one mile west of Three Points. Admission to the pumpkin festival costs $4; the corn maze costs $5 to $7. Call 822-2277 for details.
