The scores may not indicate how the UA soccer team played during its pair of home games this weekend, as it fell to 0-2 in Pacific 10 Conference play after losing to No. 21 California and Stanford.

Arizona (4-7-1, 0-2-0 Pac-10) lost 3-0 yesterday to Cal (6-3-3, 1-1-0) after playing the Golden Bears tough in the first half.

On Friday, the Wildcats couldn't hold on to a 2-1 lead against Stanford (6-6-1, 1-1-0), falling 3-2.

UA head coach Dan Tobias believed the Wildcats played well in the first half against Cal, but the Bears' late second-half goal just changed the dynamics of yesterday's game.

"To quote Cal's coach (Kevin Boyd), ĪNo one's knocked around the ball on us like that, including Santa Clara, the national runner-up, yet this year,' so I thought we played quite well in the first half," Tobias said. "Cal's an excellent team and they have very good players. They got an early goal and capitalized on a mistake by us, and I thought the difference was the chances that we had in the first half that we didn't convert versus giving up a goal with only a few moments left in the second half."

Cal took the lead early, scoring a goal in the 12th minute and then another just before the half. In the 70th minute, the Golden Bears closed out the scoring with a goal off a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box.

In the 60th minute, UA sophomore midfielder Jennifer Klein nearly cut the Bears' lead to one with a header, but just missed by hitting the bottom of the crossbar. The ball was knocked away by Cal goaltender Anna Key.

Arizona outshot Cal 15-12, but the Golden Bears led in shots on goal, 9-5.

Tobias said that junior forward Candice Wilks, who had both of Arizona's goals on Friday against Stanford, had another good day yesterday, creating a lot of problems for Cal's defense.

"She played against some of not only the best players in the conference, but the country," he said. "Stanford's the defending Pac-10 champion ÷ undefeated and unscored upon ÷ and she scored two goals on Friday night."

Against the Cardinal, Wilks scored in spectacular fashion. After receiving a pass from junior midfielder Vanesha Bailey near midfield, Wilks beat three Cardinal defenders and scored, despite being fouled. The referee called off the foul because Wilks had the advantage on the play.

"It got me out of my seat. Great early ball by Vanesha, and she was just real decisive," Tobias said. "Candice has been real decisive with her finishing this year. She's just so explosive and the ball just comes off her foot like a rocket. It was placed in the side netting pretty quickly."

Wilks stole the ball from the Stanford defense to score her second goal of the match, tying the game in the 48th minute. Stanford scored 59 seconds later to finish the Wildcats off.

"(Wilks is) someone that keeps getting better, and that's a positive sign for our program," Tobias said. "She's a pleasure to coach."

Tobias believed the team played well against Stanford but is still learning to close things out. He said the Bay Area schools did a nice job of capitalizing on UA mistakes.

During the Cal game, UA sophomore midfielder Mallory Miller had to leave the game with an injury after being kicked in the knee, but returned. Junior Wildcat defender Lindsey Peeples left the game with an injury after rolling her ankle. She is day-to-day according to Tobias.

"Hopefully, talking to the trainers, it looks good. It's just a matter of these first 48 hours and how she responds to the treatment," Tobias said.

The Wildcats continue their home stand on Saturday at 7 p.m., when Arizona State (8-2-2, 2-0-0) comes to town. The Sun Devils swept the Bay Area schools, capped by an astonishing goal off a 45-yard free kick in a 1-0 win over Stanford yesterday.
