Men's Tennis Preview

The UA men's tennis team is in Midland, Texas this weekend to participate in a tournament that invites only the top tennis programs in the country.

Senior Tom Lloyd (2-1), junior Colin O'Grady (0-1), and sophomore Roger Matalonga (4-1) are representing the red and blue this weekend in the Midland Collegiate Classic, hoping to continue their fall season success.

Matalonga and O'Grady will compete in the doubles portion of the tournament. Last season, the duo posted an impressive 13-7 record and opened the spring doubles season with an eight-match winning streak.

The Wildcat trio are set to go up against the likes of Duke, Texas, Texas A&M, Pepperdine, Oklahoma, Boise State, Pacific 10 Conference rival USC, and defending national champion Illinois. Arizona's rackets will be working overtime at the Midland Country Club this weekend, as the tournament invites just 16 of the top programs in the country, putting the UA among the nation's collegiate tennis elite.

Arizona head coach Bill Wright said he is impressed with his team so far during the fall tournament season, with the team posting a collective 15-6 record.

Seeing action so far this fall have been Lloyd, Matalonga, and O'Grady, along with senior Carl Hagman and junior Paul Warkentin, who will not participate this weekend.

One of the most impressive performances this fall came from Wildcat Whi Kim ÷ although it wasn't for Arizona.

Kim is taking the fall off from UA tennis to participating in tournaments on his own. The senior played in the 2003 Cingular USTA $15,000 Pro Tournament in Lubbock, Texas.

Participating as an amateur, Kim defeated Bobby Reynolds of Vanderbilt, who spent much of last season ranked number one in the country.

Kim will return to the UA squad for the spring season.

Wright said he is not traveling with the team this weekend, but is hoping his Wildcats will add to the success they enjoyed this season.

The tournament starts today and concludes Sunday.
