photo Farmer kicked off football team

Arizona interim head coach Mike Hankwitz announced yesterday that senior running back Clarence Farmer was "dismissed from the team and will not return" due to a violation of team rules.

Farmer showed up late to last night's practice and Hankwitz told him to leave.

Hankwitz said Farmer just walked away after being told he was no longer on the squad.

"As far as I'm concerned, he sealed his own fate," Hankwitz said. [Read article]

photo Icecats tie Devils, stay undefeated

Just hours before the Arizona Iceceats were set to begin their 25th season, UA goaltender Bryan Aronchick was sick to his stomach, trying to recover from a bout with food poisoning.

But after the junior stopped 83 of 87 Arizona State shots during the team's two-game set this week, the visiting Sun Devils traveled back to Tempe, sick to their stomachs of seeing Aronchick's save totals continue to pile up. [Read article]

photo Volleyball enters another tough stretch

Facing four top-10 teams in a row normally would be the toughest stretch of the year for ÷ but the UA volleyball team has already done that.

The Wildcats (10-11, 4-6 Pacific 10 Conference) face their toughest stretch rankings-wise, again, in No. 9 Stanford (15-5, 8-3) and No. 6 California (18-2, 9-2) this weekend in the Bay Area, followed by No. 8 UCLA and No. 1 Southern California in Tucson next week. [Read article]

Generosity in the air at Tempe's MNF game

The Valley of the Sun was in a generous mood Monday night as the city of Tempe hosted its first Monday Night Football matchup in more than four years.

In the wake of the fires that are ravaging the California countryside, Sun Devil Stadium had a rare chance to grab some national attention and give something back to the community.

And give they did.

You might recall the last Monday Night Football game in Tempe on Sept. 27, 1999; "giving" was a theme in that one as well. San Francisco's Lawrence Phillips gave Arizona Cardinal free safety Aeneas Williams a free rushing lane. Williams returned the favor by giving 49ers quarterback Steve Young a devastating career ending concussion. [Read article]

A tale of a misplaced football game

This is a true comedy of errors. A string of horrible coincidences. Maybe just a plain old random work of God.

Let me say this to be perfectly clear: I, in no way, started or know anyone involved whatsoever with the origins of the San Diego wildfires. My sister and brother-in-law now live in San Diego, less than a mile from Qualcomm Stadium. I have friends who have evacuated their homes because of the fires. This situation is very serious. Men's soccer wins in dramatic fashion

You think you know drama? The men of the UA's club soccer team, they know drama.

With the season hanging in the balance and a trip to the national tournament on the line, Arizona found itself in a rather precarious position trying to preserve a 4-3 lead late in Saturday's regional playoff game against Utah State. The must-win matchup could keep the Wildcats' postseason dreams alive and inch them closer to returning to the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association's national tournament in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
