You think you know drama? The men of the UA's club soccer team, they know drama.
With the season hanging in the balance and a trip to the national tournament on the line, Arizona found itself in a rather precarious position trying to preserve a 4-3 lead late in Saturday's regional playoff game against Utah State. The must-win matchup could keep the Wildcats' postseason dreams alive and inch them closer to returning to the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association's national tournament in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Up by a goal with time running out, goaltender Dave Donderwicz drew a red card after leveling an oncoming Aggie forward in a two-way race for the loose ball. With Donderwicz forced to leave the game, it came down to backup keeper Zac Risinger to come off the bench without any chance to warm up to defend against the Aggie penalty kick.
A fired-up Wildcat squad exalted when Risinger guessed right and promptly stuffed the ensuing kick.
"He literally saved the game," forward Michael "Bub" Steele said of the keeper's season-extending save.
While a goal would have only tied the game, a tie would have eliminated the Wildcats just the same.
"I just had a feeling that he was going to go right with it," Risinger said. "Sure enough, he did, and I was there to stop it."
Arizona went on to add another goal to seal the 5-3 victory on the foot of Dragan Kotak.
Kotak tallied four goals for the Wildcats against the Aggies and proved to be the most valuable player for Arizona over the weekend.
On Sunday, it was Kotak once again carrying Arizona - this time scoring the game-winning goal in a 2-1 victory over Utah Valley State. Kotak took a Steele pass and drilled a one-timer past the Wolverine goalie from 35 yards out.
The win clinched a trip to Alabama for the Wildcats. Arizona put a final touch on the weekend by dropping conference rival Arizona State by the same 2-1 score. Dragan added his sixth goal of the regional tourney and Hector Gomez scored as well to guide Arizona past the Sun Devils in the championship game.
Although both squads made the national tournament, with the win, Arizona will have its entrance fee paid for by the conference and will retain state bragging rights.
The Wildcats return to nationals for the third time in as many years - their second trip to Tuscaloosa. The tourney will be played Nov. 20-22 on the campus of the University of Alabama.
