Sophomore doesn't run track any longer, wears big earrings like the people back home
Wildcat: My name's Nathan and you're On the Spot. Do you play any sports?
Matthews: I don't play any sports. I ended my sports career in high school. I was supposed to run track here but I decided not to.
Wildcat: Oh really? What did you run?
Matthews: Long jump, triple jump, 200-meter dash. My main thing was the triple jump. I almost went state in California.
Wildcat: I run pretty fast but some people might say that's because I'm Hispanic, you know ... always got to be running. But, are those real? [nodding to Matthews' earrings.]
Matthews: These earrings are fake. Like, back home - I'm from Los Angeles - and everyone wears oversized fake earrings, and we don't care 'cause it just looks nice. So when you go to certain areas, even out here, people ask "are they real?" and "why you wearing fake earrings?" you know, 'cause they're so big. But back home, we do it all the time, so it's nothing.
Wildcat: That's cool. What part of L.A.? Crazy parts?
Matthews: Yeah. My neighborhood's so-so. I live off of Venice Boulevard and La Brea. And I don't know if you've ever heard of Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles, but I live like, right down the street from there. It's like a famous place in L.A.
Wildcat: Is it like, to eat?
Matthews: Yeah. It's good. It's really good.
Wildcat: What do they serve?
Matthews: Chicken ... waffles. Other stuff too, but -
Wildcat: It's called Chicken and Waffles? That sounds like it would give you a stomach ache, just the name.
Matthews: Nah - it's delicious, man. Before I went, I was like "how do chicken and waffles go together," but the fried chicken is so flavorful and delicious, and the waffles, they got a special batter and I don't know what it is about those waffles. You can't eat just one.
