"This darn thing is complicated. We are figuring out that it's smarter than we are."

John Nametz, director of the financial aid office, on the computer program that has delayed the distribution of millions of dollars in aid and scholarships to students.

"There are a lot of grateful parents, and the students appreciate the little things (such as) the free stuff. They ask us, ÎWhy are you giving us free things?' And we say, ÎBecause we're glad you're back!' We're thankful; it's our way of showing we appreciate your enrollment."
