The opponents may have been different for the Arizona soccer team, but the outcome looked all too familiar.

In a pair of games against Oregon State and Oregon last weekend, the Wildcats forced their opponents to play catch-up, as Arizona passed around them, outran them, beat them in the air and created more quality opportunities than their opponents.

Volleyball tops No. 6 Bears in Berkeley

Even though her sister didn't play, UA sophomore outside hitter Jennifer Abernathy may have earned family bragging rights for a year with her career night during the Arizona volleyball team's sweep of the Golden Bears.

Behind Abernathy's career-high 24 kills, Arizona (11-12, 5-7 Pacific 10 Conference) upset California (19-3, 10-3) in Berkeley Saturday night. Despite having played No. 1 USC, No. 8 UCLA, No. 9 Stanford and No. 10 Washington, Cal had only lost twice before Friday's match ÷ but it took USC and UCLA five games to beat them. [Read article]

photo Icecats trample Ice Vols in weekend sweep

Sandwiched between games with No. 18 Arizona State and a trip to No. 14 Towson, the Icecats made the most of their games with undermanned Tennessee, blowing out the Ice Vols on consecutive nights.

No. 10 Arizona (3-0-1) embarrassed Tennessee (4-8-0), 10-1, on Friday and 11-0 on Saturday. The Icecats outshot UT 60-10 on Friday and 62-11 on Saturday.

"I thought we got what we needed to get out of the weekend, I guess," UA head coach Leo Golembiewski said. "We had pretty good offensive pressure all weekend." [Read article]

Swim and dive teams open up with win vs. Wisconsin

The Arizona men's and women's swimming and diving teams began their 2003-04 season Saturday with victories over the Wisconsin Badgers. The Wildcats took home the men's team title ÷ 175-121 ÷ while also grabbing the women's team title by a score of 172.5-128.5.

UA sophomore Lyndon Ferns dominated the day's events on the men's side, while senior Jessica Wagner controlled the women's competition. Ferns took home three titles, placing first in the 200 freestyle, 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle individual competitions, while Wagner won the 100 and 200 breaststroke events. [Read article]
