The opponents may have been different for the Arizona soccer team, but the outcome looked all too familiar.
In a pair of games against Oregon State and Oregon last weekend, the Wildcats forced their opponents to play catch-up, as Arizona passed around them, outran them, beat them in the air and created more quality opportunities than their opponents.
And Arizona still managed to walk off the field with two losses.
On Halloween night at Murphey Stadium, the Wildcats (5-10-2, 1-4-1 Pacific 10 Conference) outshot Oregon State (7-9-2, 3-3-1) 20-6, but lost the game 2-1.
Oregon State's Brianna Monka scored in the 16th minute on Oregon State's second shot on goal.
Arizona had already taken four shots by the time OSU took the lead, taking 13 more through the rest of the first half, but went into the break with nothing on the scoreboard to show for it.
The UA defense, led by junior Lindsey Peeples, stifled the Beavers and didn't allow them to even bother UA goalkeeper Natalie Juarez with another shot on goal in the first half.
Freshman forward Lauren Winters put one in the net for the Wildcats at 55:38 to tie the game. Winters' second goal of the year came off a pass from sophomore midfielder Lisa Kosena near the 15-yard mark on the right side.
But the Beavers struck again in the 71st minute when sophomore forward Tessa Baker took a pass from Lindsey Beem to score the game-winning goal.
"We dominated all game," Winters said. "It's just the mental breakdown that puts us in this predicament."
The match was physical throughout, with Oregon State racking up 15 fouls to Arizona's seven.
With nine minutes remaining in the match, Juarez and OSU sophomore Stacey Mescher got into a scuffle, resulting in a red card for Mescher and a yellow card for Juarez. The Beavers had already picked up a yellow card at the beginning of the second half.
"It was physical because both teams are in the same level in the Pac-10," Winters said. "We are trying to get above them, and they are trying to get above us."
Sunday's match marked the celebration of senior day at Murphey Stadium, as well as the final home match of the season for the Wildcats.
Despite controlling the fast-paced tempo for most of the game, creating multiple scoring chances and succeeding at keeping the ball away from Oregon defenders, Arizona once again left the field without a win, falling 1-0 to the visiting Ducks.
Oregon (9-9-0, 3-4-0) and Arizona each had five shots on goal while battling to a scoreless deadlock in the first half.
The Wildcats came out sluggish after the break, giving Oregon opportunities on errant passes and putting UA defenders in difficult positions.
"It's the final pass," UA head coach Dan Tobias said. "We seemed to take too many extra touches, trying to get a good look at the goal instead of going with the look you are given."
It didn't take long for Oregon to capitalize on Wildcat miscues. Just five minutes into the second half, Oregon's Andrea Valadez scored from five yards out on a set-up pass from the left side by Nicole Garbin.
It was all the Ducks would need to preserve the victory. Arizona took four shots in the second half, but once again failed to score.
"It was sad. It's unfortunate the result didn't come out (in our favor)," said senior UA defender Lindsey Greenwood, playing in her last home game as a Wildcat. "We played good, (but we) just didn't get the goals."
Arizona will spend the week preparing for a pair of road matches against the Washington schools next weekend in what will be its final games of the season.
Tobias' game plan will be the same as it has always been.
"We need to have 90 minutes of focus," he said. "Good teams are going to capitalize on a team's lapses."
