Sandwiched between games with No. 18 Arizona State and a trip to No. 14 Towson, the Icecats made the most of their games with undermanned Tennessee, blowing out the Ice Vols on consecutive nights.
No. 10 Arizona (3-0-1) embarrassed Tennessee (4-8-0), 10-1, on Friday and 11-0 on Saturday. The Icecats outshot UT 60-10 on Friday and 62-11 on Saturday.
"I thought we got what we needed to get out of the weekend, I guess," UA head coach Leo Golembiewski said. "We had pretty good offensive pressure all weekend."
Junior forward Don Holtz had a hat trick Saturday night to complement his goal Friday night.
Sophomore forward Cole Dunlop had two goals Saturday and one Friday, while sophomore forward D.J. Pelletier had two goals in the second game. Junior forward Mickey Meehan and sophomore forward Brian Pollock had a goal in each game, while Mike Smith, Bryan Meagher and Jerod Keene also scored.
"Holtzie had a great weekend; Dunlop did, too," Golembiewski said.
Holtz and Dunlop each have six goals just four games into the Icecats' season.
"It was a pretty good start for me," Holtz said. "Basically, I felt like I was doing my job."
Freshman forward Dave Cwik ended his scoring drought with the third goal of the second period in the second game, which he celebrated by sliding across the ice as if he were in a canoe and rowing with his stick.
"We didn't mean to show up Tennessee. It was just that (Cwik) could have had six goals against Arizona State and should have had about five goals (Friday)," Golembiewski said. "We were going to think about burning the entrails and everything before the game to exorcise whatever spirit there was or wasn't. It was important to get the monkey off the back."
During the pair of weekend blowouts, the Icecats also had the opportunity to get starting goaltender Bryan Aronchick's backups some ice time.
Sophomore goalie Casey Leyva played the second and third periods during Friday's victory. He yielded his only goal 28 seconds into the second.
Junior goalie Rick Karasch got his first career start on Saturday, also earning his first shutout and first assist, coming on a goal by Holtz.
"We did real well," said Karasch, a Tucson native. "It was not a tough team, but we played well together."
Karasch said he was anxious to get some playing time.
"I wasn't nervous, I was just excited," Karasch said. "I just wanted to play well for the team."
The Icecats now enter a stretch in which they face some of the top teams in the country.
"Now everything is top 10 or top 15 for the rest of year," Golembiewski said. "We know we've got our work cut out for us."
The Icecats travel to Maryland to face No. 14 Towson Thursday, followed by a trip across the Chesapeake to play in Annapolis against Navy.
Arizona's next home series is Nov. 14 and 15 against No. 11 Weber State ÷ the front end of a 12-game home stand.
"We'll have our hands full," Golembiewski said.
