After being swept by No. 6 Cal in Tucson, sophomore outside hitter Jennifer Abernathy led the UA volleyball team to a sweep of her sister Gabrielle's Golden Bears near her hometown of Antioch, Calif. Abernathy earned national and Pac-10 Player of the week honors in the process.

After relying heavily on her good friend and roommate, sophomore outside hitter Kim Glass, most of the season, Abernathy has been on a tear recently, leading the Wildcats to a 5-3 stretch in their last eight games - including a pair of victories over top-10 opponents.

Abernathy took a break from receiving national accolades to talk to the Wildcat about her sibling rivalry, candy bars and attractive UA athletes.

Wildcat: So, did you get anything for being named national player of the week?

Abernathy: Just the congratulations.

Wildcat: You didn't get a plaque or anything?

Abernathy: No.

Wildcat: But now you have the honor of the real Athlete of the Week award - the Wildcat's.

Abernathy: Yeah (laughs).

Wildcat: After Cal beat you, did your sister talk any trash?

Abernathy: Yeah, she tried to a little bit, but I just hang up on her. I talked back to her this weekend. We got even.

Wildcat: What did she say after this weekend?

Abernathy: She said, "The only reason you guys won is because I wasn't playing."

Wildcat: So, who's better?

Abernathy: I'm not going to answer that. That's not a good question (laughs).

Wildcat: What's your favorite TV show?

Abernathy: I don't watch TV. We don't have cable (laughs).

Wildcat: What's your favorite movie?

Abernathy: "The Ring."

Wildcat: How come?

Abernathy: Because I like scary movies. It's the only one that actually got me scared in a little while.

Wildcat: Last time, when I did Athlete of the Week with Kim Glass (Arizona Daily Wildcat, 10/23/03), she kind of consulted you for her top five hottest male athletes here. What's your list?

Abernathy: In no order, it would be Darrell Brooks, Channing Frye, Andre ...

Wildcat: Iguodala?

Abernathy: No, that football one that Kim said.

Wildcat: Andre Torrey?

Abernathy: Yeah. That's three?

Wildcat: Yeah, I think.

Abernathy: How about we just have top three? (Abernathy later added Tony Wingate through the UA volleyball Sports Information Director).

Wildcat: In that other Athlete of the Week, Kim said you guys never washed your Thundercats sweatbands.

Abernathy: That's true. It's a good luck thing, I guess.

Wildcat: You can't wash them now - you guys are playing so well.

Abernathy: Yeah.

Wildcat: If you were starving to death and you had to steal a candy bar, what brand would you get?

Abernathy: (Laughs) Snickers - king size.

Wildcat: Even though it is No. 4 in the first poll, the basketball team told the Arizona Daily Star it is "flying under the radar." Do you think the volleyball team still is?

Abernathy: Yeah.

Wildcat: Do you think if the season ended today, you guys would be in the tournament?

Abernathy: Rules-wise, no, because we're below .500.

Wildcat: I mean, do you think you should be?

Abernathy: Yeah.

Wildcat: Do you think Southern California will be beaten this year?

Abernathy: Yeah.

Wildcat: Is this the weekend?

Abernathy: Yeah.

Wildcat: If the Pac-10 had to add two schools, which teams would you want?

Abernathy: Pepperdine and Hawaii (the Wildcats upset the then-No. 5 Waves and nearly upset the No. 2 Rainbow Wahine, both on the road.)

Wildcat: How good do you think the team's left side is with you and Kim? How good can you two be?

Abernathy: I think right now, we are doing well. We play good together. We play good with our team. I think we can still get better.

Wildcat: Do you two have kind of a friendly rivalry?

Abernathy: We don't have a rivalry at all. We just play together all the time.

Wildcat: What sports could you beat Kim in?

Abernathy: Kim would probably beat me in volleyball one-on-one (laughs). I could beat her in ... what's that Frisbee game called?

Wildcat: Ultimate Frisbee, I guess.

Abernathy: Ultimate Frisbee (laughs).

Wildcat:You did track in high school?

Abernathy: I did high jump.

Wildcat: They are some football players who play track once the season's over. Have you ever thought about that?

Abernathy: Yeah, I was thinking of doing it maybe my senior year.
