Basketball: Cats take on Texas in NYC
The No. 9 Arizona men's basketball team may have two wins this season, but after falling by a single point to new-No.1 Florida and defeating upstart Saint Louis by one Saturday afternoon, it only looks to get tougher for the Wildcats, starting tonight in New York.
Arizona (2-1) and No. 6 Texas (4-0) square off at 7 p.m. tonight in the ninth annual Jimmy V Classic, honoring late North Carolina State men's basketball coach Jim Valvano.

Commentary: Valvano's message lives on in Classic
A little hope will go a long, long way. Jim Valvano knew that. The late former North Carolina State head coach and ESPN analyst even had a saying for it he developed as his final days dwindled before his very eyes.
"Don't give up, don't ever give up."
The NCAA will honor Valvano this week with its ninth annual Jimmy V. Basketball Classic and will finally do so in the inspirational coach's hometown of New York City.

Stoops starts recruiting after first day on job
New Arizona head football coach Mike Stoops spent his first full day atop the Wildcat program yesterday, meeting with returning players and planning his next venture - recruiting trips in both Arizona and California starting today.
Stoops, 41, spent his last official day as associate head coach and co-defensive coordinator of Oklahoma Saturday, as the Sooners were defeated 35-7 in the Big 12 championship game in Kansas City. He returned to Tucson Sunday afternoon to take over the post at Arizona.

Gymcats ranked No. 17 in preseason
Contrary to popular belief, there is one college athletic team happy with its current ranking: the Arizona gymnastics squad.
The Gymcats enter the season at No. 17, after finishing last season with a No. 19 ranking and a 17-19 record (1-5, Pacific 10 Conference). The preseason poll, voted on by the coaches, is the only ranking tabulated by voting. During the year, each team's score from week to week determines the national poll standings.

2003 Season Analysis: Stoops takes over young but experienced team
If you're glad this semester is almost over, just think how the Arizona football program must feel.
Over the last four months, the Wildcats have suffered through one of the worst semesters in school history. They have been through three head coaches, lost a school-record 10 games and finished last in the Pacific 10 Conference for the first time ever.
The good news for the Wildcats, though, is they don't have a football grade point average that will stick with them the rest of their college career - and with the addition of new head coach Mike Stoops, who arrived in Tucson yesterday to resume his head coaching duties on a permanent basis, everyone gets a clean slate.
