NCAA: UA athletes don't make grade

The academic progress of UA athletes ranks at the bottom of the Pacific 10 Conference, according to a preliminary report released yesterday by the NCAA, and as many as nine UA teams could receive sanctions if the findings were to take effect.

As part of data collected from the 2003-04 academic year for the National Collegiate Athletic Associations' Academic Progress Rate, five Wildcat squads - baseball, football, men's outdoor track, women's indoor track and women's outdoor track - would have been penalized by the NCAA, including a possible loss of scholarships. Wildcat for Life: Senior does grandpa Lute proud

You may not notice Matt Brase on the basketball court. He doesn't have freakish athleticism, lightning-quick speed or a lights-out jumper. His teammates notice him though, and so do the coaches. What Brase does have are a heart and a passion for the game of basketball.

The 6-foot-6 Brase started his college basketball career at Central Arizona College in Coolidge, where he played plenty of minutes and averaged 14.6 points per game as a sophomore. [Read article]

"Fuck the Draft." On April 26, 1968, Paul Cohen was arrested in a Los Angeles courthouse for wearing a jacket bearing those three words. The government charged Cohen with disturbing the peace and later prosecuted him.

Cohen's arrest culminated in the Supreme Court decision California v. Cohen, in which the court opined that the First Amendment protected Cohen's right to express his opposition to the Vietnam War - regardless of the words through which he chose to convey it. [Read article]

Sometimes it's fun to imagine that characters in Shakespeare's plays are real people. That, after the play is over, they go home, plunk down on their couches and flip on the TV. Othello likes "Fear Factor" and Hamlet is a big "Six Feet Under" fan. On Saturday nights their cell phones ring, and they're out the door.
