Men's tennis to face former coach in San Diego

The No. 29 Arizona men's tennis team is ready to hit the road again - against a familiar face.

The Wildcats (6-3) face No. 53 San Diego (1-3, 1-0) today at 1:30 p.m. in San Diego.

The Toreros have not played in three weeks, and their match against Arizona starts a span of back-to-back matches against ranked teams.

Arizona is coming off a 5-2 victory against in-state rival No. 33 ASU.

"Last weekend was great for us," said Arizona assistant coach Tad Berkowitz. "We're coming off a good win, and we're full of confidence."

Arizona was lower than ASU in the polls before the match, and the two have flip-flopped since.

With the Wildcats on the rise, Berkowitz expects his players to stay focused and not relax against a lower-ranked team like San Diego.

"They are a better team than they're ranked," Berkowitz said. "Yeah, they're 1-3, but look at who they lost to."

Those losses came against No. 13 Stanford, No. 28 California and No. 4 UCLA.

A win for Arizona would mean more than usual for the Wildcats, because it would be against their former assistant coach and current San Diego head coach Tom Hagedorn.

Hagedorn was an assistant coach at Arizona under head coach Bill Wright from 1988–1997. Prior to that, he played at Arizona from 1984-1987.

"Tom's done a great job," Berkowitz said. "This will be a good match."
