Men outplayed in Los Angeles

The No. 45 Arizona men's tennis team had hoped to do better in their rematches against No. 9 Southern California and No. 5 UCLA.

Their hopes were dashed away quickly by the 7-0 and 6-1 respective whippings they received.

USC (7-7, 2-4 Pacific 10 Conference) started off their win Saturday by taking the doubles point away from Arizona.

The No. 15 team of senior Colin O'Grady and junior Roger Matalonga defeated USC's Drew Hoskins and Adam Loucks, 8-4.

Arizona's team of senior Paul Warkentin and junior Dan Andrus fell to USC's No. 36 Jamil Al-Agba and John Berg, 6-8.

Arizona's freshmen Bruno Alcala and Jason Labrosse were narrowly defeated by USC's Jarryd Cooper and Kaes Van'tHof, 7-9, on court three.

In singles play, freshman Claudio Christen earned the Wildcats' only victory, as they defeated USC's Whit Livingston, 6-3, 6-3.

O'Grady faced No. 28 Al-Agba, losing 6-3, 6-7, 3-9 (retired).

No. 47 Matalonga lost to No. 62 Drew Hoskins, 4-1 (retired).

Warkentin faced USC's Berg, losing 6-2, 6-3, while Alcala lost to Van'tHof 6-3, 6-4.

Labrosse took on USC's Loucks, losing 6-4, 6-2.

UCLA (15-2, 4-0) dominated Arizona 7-0 Friday, with the Bruins not letting the Wildcats win a single set.

In doubles play, O'Grady and Matalonga were defeated by Ben Koelloeffel and Philipp Gruendler, 3-8.

Andrus and Warkentin lost to UCLA's Chris Lam and Luben Pampoulov, 9-7, and Alcala and Claudio lost to Mathieu Dehaine and Kris Kwinta, 8-5.

In singles play, O'Grady lost to No. 10 Kohlloeffel 6-0, 6-1, while No. 47 Matalonga lost to No. 7 Pampoulov 6-2, 7-6 (7-2).

Andrus dropped a close match to No. 50 Kwinta, 7-5, 6-4.

Warkentin lost to UCLA's Chris Lam 6-1, 6-0, while Alcala lost to No. 64 Gruendler, 6-1, 6-2.

Labrosse was defeated by Dehaine 6-3, 6-2, to complete the sweep for the Bruins.

Arizona (7-8, 0-2 Pac-10) is back at home this weekend, taking on No. 29 California Friday and No. 10 Stanford Saturday at Robson Tennis Center.

Women record one win against USC

The No. 47 Arizona women's tennis team had a tough time getting wins this weekend.

Arizona (6-8, 0-3 Pac-10 ) lost to No. 5 USC (13-1, 5-0) 6-1 Saturday.

In doubles play, No. 39 seniors Maja Mlakar and Dianne Hollands got the Wildcats' only win, defeating USC's Carine Vermeulen and Lindsey Nelson, 8-6.

USC's Nicole Leimbach and Dianne Matius defeated Arizona's team of junior Stephanie Balzert and sophomore Kasia Jakowlew, 8-1.

On court three, senior Kelly Perry and sophomore Jessie Rochefort faced USC's Anca Anastasiu and Taylon Snyder in a back-and-forth match. Arizona came up short, losing the match in a tiebreaker, 8-9, (5-7).

In singles play, Rochefort, who filled in for freshman Camelia Todorova because of food poisoning, got the only victory for the Wildcats, defeating USC's Snyder 6-3, 6-2.

On court one, No. 37 Hollands faced No. 11 Leimbach, losing 5-7, 5-7.

On court two, Mlakar faced No. 10 Nelson in a three-set thriller not reflected by the scores. Mlakar lost 1-6, 6-3, 2-6.

Anastasiu overpowered Blazert, winning 6-2, 6-3, while Perry squared off against Matius, losing 6-1, 6-3.

Jakowlew started off slow on court five against Vermeulen, and then fought back before falling 0-6, 6-2, 2-6.

No. 12 UCLA (10-4, 3-0) defeated Arizona 5-2 Friday.

The Bruins swept the Wildcats for the doubles point. Mlakar and Hollands lost 9-7 to the No. 3 team of Daniela Bercek and Riza Zalameda.

Balzert and Jakowlew lost 8-6 to UCLA's Laura Gordon and Alex McGoodwin.

The Bruins' Tracy Lin and Sarah Gregg defeated Perry and Rochefort, 8-4, to complete the sweep for the Bruins.

In singles play, Hollands faced No. 32 Bercek, losing 6-2, 7-5.

Mlakar faced No. 18 Zalameda on court two, outlasting her 7-5,

6-2, giving the Wildcats' their second point.

Minutes before, Perry defeated UCLA's Gregg 6-2, 6-2.

That would be all the wins for Arizona.

Balzert lost to McGoodwin, 6-3, 6-2, on court three, and Jakowlew lost to Lin 6-0, 6-4.

Rochefort face No. 85 Gordon on court four, losing 7-5, 6-1.

"Obviously this weekend didn't go very well," said Arizona assistant coach Brian Ramirez. "Both teams (UCLA and USC) are very good. It was an uphill battle."

Ramirez said his team had good chances to win the doubles point in both matches but just couldn't close the book on them.

Arizona meets No. 24 California in Berkeley, Calif., April 1 and No. 1 Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif., April 2.
