UA President Peter Likins has nominated an internationally recognized engineer for the rank of Regents' professor, an honor reserved for faculty scholars of exceptional ability who have achieved national and international distinction, according to a press release.

Farhang Shadman, a professor of chemical and environmental engineering in the College of Engineering, also holds a joint appointment in the College of Optical Sciences.

He has been at the UA since 1972.

Shadman also serves at the National Science Foundation for the Semiconductor Research Corporation Engineering Research Center on Environmentally Benign Semiconductor Manufacturing.

Shadman's areas of research include applications of chemical reaction engineering in semiconductor optoelectronics manufacturing, advanced materials processing and environmental contamination control.

"His creativity and innovation have led to new technologies and processes being adapted by industries," according to the press release.

The press release also stated "as an outstanding faculty member, he has brought to the university a level of recognition and stature in his particular area of expertise that is unparalleled."

It also stated that the importance of Shadman's work is reflected in part by the significant amount of industrial funding he receives for his research.

The title Regents' Professor was created by the Arizona Board of Regents in 1987, and is awarded to faculty members who have made a unique contribution to the quality of the university through distinguished accomplishments in teaching scholarship, research or creative work.
