Officer shot at during car chase
The passenger in a stolen vehicle fired two shots at a UAPD officer Monday morning before leading the officer on a chase through the West University Neighborhood. The stolen car was later found abandoned and suspects are still at large.

UA soldier returns from war
For a soldier at war, being away from home and family could be the hardest part of serving; but for a veteran at home, enjoying freedoms and liberties while others are fighting could be the hardest part of getting back into civilian life.

NASA probes comet for deeper understanding
In the late hours of July 3rd, NASA launched the 820-pound Deep Impact probe at comet Tempel 1, hoping to glean insight into the ancient ball of frozen dirt and water.

University of Maryland professor Michael A’Hearn, the principle investigator for the Deep Impact mission, said previous missions have been able to study the surface of a comet.

New design for UA Web site
Students will be able to access the sixth version of the UA Web site, with more options and a new look, when it goes live this weekend.
The Web site, which was developed by the UA Web team with guidance from the UA Web Advisory Council, will have a better search engine and more fluid design, said Tracey Hummel, a Web developer.
The first UA homepage was released in 1994 and the current page was released in 2002.

Construction heats up in summertime
According to the Department of Campus Facilities and Planning, the UA has an estimated daytime population of over 50,000, a number that could compete with a variety of urban centers.
Like a small city, these numbers must be constantly calculated and re-calculated in order to not only accommodate the current population base but to account for future expansion and growth.
During the summer months, the pace on campus slows to a fraction of the regular semester. However, many different projects continue through the sweltering Tucson heat.

Fast facts
taken weekly with a grain of salt
Though he specialized in hygiene and was one of the first to emphasize the subject as a matter of good health rather than of good manners, the German chemist Max Joseph von Pettenkofer disdained the germ theory of disease. He said he’d show them, and miraculously did – he deliberately swallowed a virulent culture of cholera bacteria. That he did not get the disease remains, a century and a half later, a source of amazement.
