Today
Mankind
Apparently, this band plays postmodern funk and hip-hop. I have no idea what the term postmodern funk means, but who cares? There's no truth anyway. With Golden Boots and the George Squier Orchestra. 9:30 p.m. $4. Plush. 340 E. Sixth St. (21+)
Po Girl
Unless you're po, you should probably go see this group. Their music has elements of "vagabond lullabies, hobo-poetry and inner-city blues." Not too sure what these mean either. Club Congress. 7 p.m. $10 in advance, $12 at the door. 311 E. Congress St.
Tomorrow
Felonious Groove Foundation
I saw this band last Valentine's Day at a house party. They're moving up in the world and playing at a real club, which ultimately just means less alcohol. Performing with Dakari Connection and P.I.A. 7 p.m. $5. City Limits. 6350 E. Tanque Verde Road
Jam and Gem Show
If you're a holdover hippie, have a relative from Sedona or just really like rocks for some reason, you've probably been to the gem show. This one promises to be slightly less boring, because there'll be cool music. Well, at least one of the guys from The String Cheese Incident will be there. The show features Zilla, Pnuma Trio, Lauleta, and Clark & Smokovich. 6 p.m. $15. Club Congress. 311 E. Congress St.
First Friday Shorts
The guy who draws that Red Meat comic will be hosting a local short film contest at the Loft. If your short-term memory is less than 10 minutes long, you won't even have to take an Adderall! $5. The Loft. 3233 E. Speedway Blvd.
Saturday
Arizona Balalaika Orchestra
After the fall of communism, the closing of the Russian Tea Room and the realization that "Crime and Punishment" really did suck, we can't be so sure how much longer we'll have left to enjoy Russia. Go see this 30-member Russian band play on authentic instruments with Russian dancing and singing while there's still time. 7:30 p.m. $10 student tickets. Pima Community College Proscenium Theatre. 2202 W. Anklam Road
"The Vagina Monologues"
If vaginas could talk, who knows what they would say. Let's just hope this play doesn't turn into a commercial for cotton (the fabric of our lives). 7 p.m. $20 or $45 love seat for two. Fox Theatre. 17 W. Congress St.
Roman Polanski's "Repulsion"
What can be more repulsive than drugging and raping a 13-year-old girl? Hopefully not this movie, 'cause that would probably be even worse than "Hostel." 10 p.m. $5. The Loft. 3233 E. Speedway Blvd.

Sunday
"I Know I'm Not Alone"
Activist and musician Michael Franti went on a mission to the Middle East for peace and will play music and talk about it. It's probably pretty impressive considering that a normal college mission is going to Pita Pit at 3 in the morning. 7 p.m. $22. Rialto Theatre. 318 E. Congress St.
"The Good Doctor"
Neil Simon, not to be confused with Paul Simon, Simon from American Idol or Simon Says, wrote this play as a series of vignettes. 7:30 p.m. $12. Top Hat Theatre Club. 3110 E. Fort Lowell Road
Monday
A 90primer on Galaxy Evolution
Your guess is as good as mine. Only scientists would have the guts to mix words with numbers. That alone, and talk about galaxies and stuff, is worth your visit. Telescope viewing follows. 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Free. Steward Observatory, Room N210. 933 N. Cherry Ave.
Tuesday
Creativity and Illness: Virginia Woolf's "On Being Ill"
If you really can't make this panel discussion, no use telling them the dog ate your homework or your car battery broke. Just tell them you were sick! 6 p.m. Free. Center for Creative Photography, 1030 N. Olive Road
Wednesday
Peggy Shumaker
This woman has published poems by the names of "Underground Rivers," "Braided River" and "Wings Moist from the Other World." She probably just really likes water. 8 p.m. Free. Modern Languages Auditorium.
Kathleen Gabriel
This woman will talk about the three Es for classroom diversity: encourage, enrich and empower. Since it's next to the Student Union Memorial Center, you can also eat, entertain and then end your life. Noon. Free. Gallagher Theater
"Scenes from an Execution"
In this play, an artist is commissioned to commemorate the Battle of Lepanto in 1571. Somehow, it also manages to have some nudity, mature scenes and adult language, too. Seems like my kind of play. 7:30 p.m. $26, discounts available. Laboratory Theatre, southeast corner of North Park Avenue and East Speedway Boulevard
