Things you always never wanted to know

  • If a glass of water were magnified to the size of earth, the molecules comprising it would be about as big as a large orange.

  • In 1824, Andrew Jackson received more popular votes than John Quincy Adams, yet lost the election. The vote was so close that neither candidate received a majority of the electoral votes. The decision then went to the House of Representatives, which elected Adams.

  • Sterling silver is not pure silver. Because pure silver is too soft to be used in most tableware, it is mixed with copper in the proportion of 92.5 percent silver to 7.5 percent copper.

  • The first coin minted in the United States was a silver dollar. It was issued on October 15, 1794.

  • In 1915, the average annual family income in the United States was $687 a year.

  • Salt Lake City, Utah, gets an average of 17 inches more snow annually than Fairbanks, Alaska. Santa Fe, New Mexico, gets an average of 9 inches more snow each year than New Haven, Connecticut.

  • The "silhouette" is named after Etienne de Silhouette, a French author and statesman who reputedly was highly skilled at the art of cutting profiles out of paper.

  • The Greek national anthem has 158 verses.

  • More than 100 descendants of Johann Sebastian Bach have been cathedral organists.

  • Goat's milk is used more widely throughout the world than cow's milk.

  • Diamond Jim Brady's average breakfast as recorded by a New York restauranteur: a gallon of orange juice, three eggs, a quarter loaf of corn bread, sirloin steak with fried potatoes, hominy grits and bacon, two muffins and several pancakes. For dinner he might eat three dozen oysters, two bowls of turtle soup and six crabs as an appetizer. Restaurant owners referred to him as the best 25 customers they ever had.

  • In one day a full-grown oak tree expels seven tons of water through its leaves.
