Bonvicini receives courage award
UA head women's basketball coach Joan Bonvicini was presented with the National Association for Women (NOW) 2004 Woman of Courage award Saturday at the Arizona Inn in Tucson.
Bonvicini was given the award for her work in the Tucson community with the Southern Arizona Center Against Sexual Assault, the Women's Foundation of Southern Arizona, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Tucson, the Tucson Center for Women and Children, Leukemia and Lymphoma Association, the Girl Scouts of America and the YMCA.
The NOW award is given to a woman who influences young lives and makes a contribution to the community through organizations and fundraising.
"Joan really is a woman of courage," senior associate athletics director Kathleen LaRose said in presenting Bonvicini with the award.
"She is helping the next generation by showing young girls that it is OK to be strong, confident, athletic and female."
Bonvicini sits atop the all-time UA women's basketball wins list and has led the Wildcats to eight postseason appearances, including NCAA tournament berths the last two years and a share of the Pacific 10 Conference Championship last season.
Volleyball preps for opener with scrimmage
The Red team beat the Blue team four games to none in an intra-squad scrimmage Saturday to kick off the 2004 Arizona volleyball season.
Former player Shannon Torregrosa, playing for the Red team, led all players with 22 kills and nine blocks. Freshman setter Amy Dyck, also playing for the Red team, added 37 assists, one less than sophomore setter Stephanie Butkus playing for the Blue team.
The Wildcats begin their season Wednesday with a 7 p.m. match at San Diego State.
