photo Women's tennis goes global

Athletes come from all over the globe, spend hours on the practice court in preparation for competition and learn from their fellow players who all bring something else to the cultural mix.

While this sounds like a night in Olympic Village, it also describes the Arizona women's tennis team, which features eight players all born in different countries.

Led by seniors Dianne Hollands of New Zealand, Maja Mlakar of Slovenia and the lone American-born player, Kelly Perry, the squad has been transformed into its own international community thanks to the recruiting efforts of fourth-year coach Vicky Maes, herself a former Wildcat recruited from Belgium. photo Men's Hoops: Big games not new to Wildcats

With 16 straight years of 20 wins or more under your belt, opposing teams tend to notice your success. The UA men's basketball team knows this and expects nothing less any time they step on the court.

"Our players know that when they come here, you stick an Arizona jersey on your chest and you are never going to get anybody's second effort," said head coach Lute Olson. "We've been used to being the hunted since '85-'86." [Read article]

photo Women's hoops tries to avenge loss to ASU

State bragging rights and revenge are on the line in tonight's contest as the UA women's basketball team takes on in-state rival Arizona State at 7 in McKale Center.

Both teams hold an identical record of 14 wins against five losses and a 6-3 mark in the Pacific 10 Conference and both teams are tied for third place behind Stanford and Southern California in conference standings.

"This is a big game for conference but it's also a pride thing," said UA head coach Joan Bonvicini. "The No. 1 thing (is to) play Arizona basketball, (which is) playing with pride and heart and passion." [Read article]

Freshman year in college is typically full of new things, new stresses and newfound responsibilities. As if it is not hard enough to be a freshman, try being a freshman athlete.

On top of going to classes, having a full schedule and attempting to maintain a good grade point average, there are the additional obligations of practice, meets and other team duties.

Freshman swimmer Lacey Nymeyer is experiencing the life of a freshman athlete and making her mark on the UA women's swim team along the way. [Read article]
