In McKale, Cougs snap 38-game losing streak to Wildcats

It was a short stay at the top of the Pacific 10 Conference standings, as Washington State defeated the No. 11 Arizona men's basketball team 70-63 in McKale Center Saturday afternoon.

The Cougars (9-9, 4-5) have now defeated two of the top three teams in the Pac-10 - Stanford and Arizona. They defeated Stanford in Pullman, Wash., Dec. 31, 60-51. [Read article]

Men's Hoops: Analysis

Stunned Wildcats should shoulder blame for defeat

The No. 11 Arizona men's basketball team was stunned by Washington State Saturday afternoon in McKale Center - the Wildcats' first loss to the Cougars in 19 years - and there was no good explanation for the defeat.

"We just didn't come to play today," said center Channing Frye, who grabbed two rebounds and shot 2-of-7 from the field.

"We weren't ready as a team," guard Mustafa Shakur added. "I can't pinpoint it, but (we) just weren't ready." [Read article]

MARYLAND 84, UA 77

Despite overcoming a 10-point halftime deficit, the UA women's basketball team ultimately fell short, losing 84-77 in overtime to No. 20 Maryland Saturday in McKale Center.

"As much as this hurts, when you play a game like this, you learn more from a loss," said UA head coach Joan Bonvicini. "We're never going to be in this situation again this year. It's (a loss) we're going to remember for a while." [Read article]

photo Baseball falls to alumni in last at-bat

The Arizona baseball team does not hope to see any teams celebrating late-inning victories on its home field this season.

However, they made an exception Sunday when the alumni beat the current players 7-6 in their last at-bat at Sancet Stadium in the Jim Click Alumni Game.

The Wildcats held a 6-4 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh and final inning. After a bases-loaded wild pitch scored class of 1993's George Arias and put runners in scoring position, 1988's Mike Thorell singled home both runners to end the game. [Read article]

Gymcats defeat Minnesota, Seattle-Pacific, fall short to Huskies

After two consecutive upset wins at home, the No. 20 Arizona women's gymnastics team hit the road Friday for Seattle in hopes of keeping its three-match winning streak intact.

In the end, the Gymcats (8-4) finished second out of four teams with a final score of 194.800. They finished ahead of No. 24 Minnesota (193.700) and Seattle-Pacific (191.025), but fell to host No. 22 Washington, which finished with a season-high score of 195.075. [Read article]

Icecats split weekend set against No. 9 Weber State

Winning on the road is never easy, especially with two captains sidelined by injury against a top-10 opponent.

But that's exactly what the UA Icecats (10-9-1) did Saturday against No. 9 Weber State (17-8-3).

Arizona bounced back from a 3-2 loss Friday to hand WSU an 8-5 defeat Saturday and remain alive in the chase for an American Collegiate Hockey Association National Tournament berth.

"Our guys really rose up," said Icecats head coach Leo Golembiewski. "It was a strong weekend and I have no complaints." [Read article]
