Students warned of travel threats

The U.S. Department of State recently issued a warning that travel to Mexico is unstable because of violence related to drug trafficking along the U.S.-Mexico border.

The University of Arizona Police Department sent out a campus alert last week to inform students and faculty about new dangers of traveling south of the border.

Eugene Mejia, UAPD spokesman, said violence in Mexico has increased because criminal organizations are fighting for drug trafficking control. [Read article]

Women's Soccer: Tobias named nat'l Coach of Year

Players on the Arizona women's soccer team pulled in plenty of awards for their record-breaking 2004 season, but this time, it was the coach's turn.

UA Head coach Dan Tobias was named National Coach of the Year by Soccer America magazine in just his second year with the program.

"The credit goes to my players and assistants," Tobias said.

"It's a great honor for coach Tobias and he certainly deserves it," UA Athletic Director Jim Livengood said in a press release. "The job the Wildcat soccer team did in 2004 was tremendous and his great leadership was instrumental." [Read article]

Adrienne Walser, on top of the costs for tuition, books and rent, pays $100 a month for the prescription medication she needs for rheumatoid arthritis, which she's had since age 8. Also, every eight weeks, Walser, a graduate student of English, pays $400 for special drug injections to control the painful arthritis.

Although Walser has student health insurance, she has to pay for the prescriptions out of her own pocket because UA's student health insurance doesn't cover prescription drugs. Last year, in part because of these expensive drug costs, Walser had to return to working full time - meaning that she could no longer work as a graduate teaching assistant and could enroll only as a part-time student.
