Sorority raises money for AIDS with 'Men' calendar

A UA sorority has created a calendar featuring some of the finest men on campus to raise funds for AIDS/HIV research.

Every year, the UA chapter of Alpha Epsilon Phi publishes a calendar of the UA's 12 most attractive men, and donates all proceeds to the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric Aids Foundation, said Rebecca Gerrick, the sorority's philanthropy chair.

The foundation's Web site states their mission is to provide assistance to families and children with HIV or AIDS.

As a chapter, the women nominate about 100 UA men they think have what it takes to be in their Men of Arizona calendar, said Gerrick, a psychology sophomore.

After the nominations are compiled, they head to the mall to let UA students pick the best 12. The nominated men in the calendars include members of ASUA, guys in fraternities, and friends and boyfriends of women in the sorority, Gerrick said.

Each vote a student casts costs 50 cents and contributes to the production of the calendar along with donations from sponsors, such as local businesses and parent donations from both the men and women involved in the calendar, Gerrick said.

Gerrick ran the entire production of the calendar, but said since this was her first year with the project she could not do it without the help of Robin Goldberg, another Alpha Epsilon Phi member, and last year's philanthropy chair Tyler Ross.

Both Goldberg, media arts junior, and Ross, psychology senior, had a lot of experience from last year's calendar and helped Gerrick with planning, format and style, Gerrick said.

After being chosen as models, the top 12 men pick where they want to have their picture taken and then volunteers from the sorority become their photographers.

Two weeks later, the calendars returned from the Spectrum Printing company and the women went to the mall for two days to sell them for $5 apiece.

So far, about 190 calendars have been sold, raising approximately $800. Gerrick said they are expecting to sell about 200 more to bring their total donation to about $1,900.

They have an idea about how much they will be donating, but their main goal, Michelle Weinberg, Alpha Epsilon Phi president, said is to, "raise more money for our philanthropy than ever before."

"A lot of the money raised is from small donations," Gerrick said. "You never realize how much a difference every little cent makes. If everyone donates 50 cents, it really adds up in the end."

Since the money is going to charity, many people feel good about donating and participating.

"When people found out that we were sending the money to charity, they were willing to do donate more than if we were selling something," Gerrick said.

Danny Glassanos, a business economics sophomore, was in the calendar last year and was more than happy to pose for the sorority.

"Because the money went to a great cause," Glassanos said.

For this same reason, Gerred Underwood, featured as Mr. September, said he was proud he participated.

"The money went to a good cause, and I am happy that I could be a part of it," said Underwood, a communications sophomore.

Underwood said the whole experience was really fun, his friends think its cool and every once in a while he gets recognized around campus.

"Someone even asked me to sign her calendar!" Underwood said.

Many of Glassanos' friends and family members were excited that he was in the calendar, which he said encouraged them to buy enough to share back at home.

"My mom bought like 10 calendars to give to family," Glassanos said.

Although the experience was fun, Glassanos said the calendar would be the extent of his modeling career.

"I had a great time, but I don't think this will turn into any serious modeling," Glassanos said.
