Track and field brings momentum to Flagstaff

Looking to build off of last week's success in Boise, Idaho and Seattle, the Arizona track teams head to NAU today for the Mountain "T" Invitational.

UA head coach Fred Harvey said the team will stress specific events in Flagstaff.

"We got a good start with our qualifying performances last week, so we're really putting an emphasis on individual events," he said.

The No. 9 men's team will face some tough competition, with No. 16 ASU and NAU joining the likes of No. 14 Oregon and No. 11 UCLA. New Mexico, New Mexico State, San Diego State, Southern Utah and Cal State-Bakersfield are also competing.

The No. 25 women's team will have just as tough of a time, as it faces the No. 9 Bruins, No. 13 Sun Devils and No. 25 Lumberjacks. Rankings are provided by Trackwire.com.

Harvey said the distance runners won't travel with the team.

"They're going to train and do a time trial on Saturday," he said.

Senior Sam Jacobson said the upcoming tough competition hasn't had much of an effect on the team.

"Track's kind of an individual sport, so as long as you're trying to do your best, that's all that matters," he said.

Senior Mark Ramos said he was going to prepare for the meet by focusing on smaller aspects.

"It's the way of the ladder, just going one step at a time," Ramos said.

Both Jacobson and Ramos agreed the altitude in Flagstaff won't affect their events.

"We run such short distances, so it doesn't really matter," Jacobson said.

"If anything, it will benefit us," Ramos added.

The indoor competition will be held in NAU's J. Lawrence Walkup Skydome, fortunate, perhaps, as forecasts call for temperatures in the low 20s.

While Jacobson said he preferred to run indoors, Ramos differed.

"I feel like a trapped animal indoors," he joked.

Ramos said he would use this meet to tune up for the NCAA Indoor Championships March 11-12.

"I'm just going to take it like a training meet, to try and get ready for the big meet," he said.

The men's and women's teams finished second and third, respectively, in a meet against ASU and NAU two weeks ago.

"It's going to be really good competition with a number of different clubs and universities up there," Harvey said. "I'm looking for some improved performances."
