Bill targets underage drinkers' suppliers

Legislation would suspend licenses of those convicted of giving alcohol to minors

PHOENIX – Though it is already a crime to knowingly buy alcohol for someone underage, a bill at the state Legislature would increase the penalty to include license suspension.

As of now, a conviction for buying alcohol for an underage person is a class 1 misdemeanor, which carries a maximum penalty of up to $2,500 and six months in jail. The bill would add that the person's license also be suspended for six months. [Read article]

Wildcats rely on non-starters to crunch minutes, add depth

The Arizona men's basketball team had no trouble taking care of the Bay Area schools last week, winning by a combined 39 points at home. Beating the scout team in practice, however, is an entirely different story.

The scout team of freshmen guards Jesus Verdejo and Daniel Dillon, senior forward Matt Brase and freshmen forwards Mohamed Tangara and Bret Brielmaier beat the starting five in practice last week 11-7, according to Olson. [Read article]

Students need to diversify image college journalism

Steve Doig has spent the past three years researching diversity in the newspaper industry and criticizing newsrooms where the racial makeup of the journalists does not reflect the demographics of the communities they serve. "It's pretty grim," said Doig, the interim director of ASU's Walter Cronkite School of Journalism, noting that the industry employs an average of 12 percent of minorities compared to the general minority population of 32 percent in the United States. "There are not enough journalists of color, not enough professors, and not enough students." [Read article]

The idea of midwives may seem 17th century to most people. However, the idea is not so foreign for guest director Rich Elliot, a UA alumnus, who uses personal experience to put a human face on this ancient term in Arizona Reparatory Theater's latest production, "Midwives."

"Midwives," adapted from the best-selling novel of the same title by Chris Bohjalian, is the story of Vermont midwife Sibyl Danforth (played by theater production senior Carley Preston). Danforth's pivotal choice to save the life of a newborn at the risk of losing the mother's life causes her life long turmoil. [Read article]
