Water polo team gains at-large bid for nationals
The UA women's water polo team was awarded an at-large bid Sunday to the national championships in Pomona, Calif.
This comes after the team finished second at the qualifying tournament April 15.
The Wildcats are ranked No. 7 out of the eight teams. They depart for Pomona Thursday, and will play their first game Friday afternoon against No. 2 University of Redlands (California).
They will then face Occidental (California) College and the home team Pomona-Pitzer College to close out round robin play. The top two teams after round robin play will advance and compete Sunday for the national championship.
Head coach Bill Loffswald believes his team is ready to compete.
"We had a letdown after finishing second at the conference qualifier," he said. "So now we are just in the mode of getting back and being ready to play."
The winner of the conference qualifier, Northern Arizona, is ranked No. 6 out of the eight teams.
