UAPD detains Chandler man in 3 minutes from early-morning 911 call
A 19-year-old Chandler man was charged with kidnapping and two counts of aggravated assault early yesterday after he allegedly held a former girlfriend and another man at knifepoint in a campus dormitory, university police said.
The woman's estranged boyfriend, identified as Phillip M. Hinkley, 18, allegedly came to Hopi Hall, 1440 E. Fourth St., to return property belonging to the female victim, police said.
Hinkley became enraged upon finding the two teenage students together and forced his way into the male victim's room through a window, police said.
Once inside, he allegedly brandished a knife, and threatened both occupants.
At 3:43 a.m., the UA Police Department received a phone call from the victim's room. There was no voice on the line, but the dispatcher heard a female crying in the background, said UAPD spokesman Michael Smith.
Attempts by the dispatcher to contact the phone number were unsuccessful, and a nearby patrol officer was immediately sent to the residence hall.
Within a minute, a second call to 911 was placed. This time, the male victim told the dispatcher the suspect took the phone from the female victim and was forcing her out of the room at knifepoint and toward the south exit, police said.
UAPD Sgt. Donald Buttery was approaching the residence hall on foot when the "hysterical" female victim came running toward him, police said. Hinkley was taken into custody by gunpoint, police said.
Neither victim or suspect was physically injured. Elapsed time from the first 911 call to the suspect being taken into custody totaled three minutes, police said.
Hinkley - who is not enrolled at UA or Arizona State University - was also charged with first-degree burglary and interference with the peaceful conduct of an educational institute. He was booked into Pima County Jail yesterday and released last night. The case remains under investigation.
