ASUA President and VP discuss next year's administration
ASUA President-elect Ray Quintero and Executive Vice President-elect Sam Chang campaigned together during student body elections, and now that they have both been elected to office, the two say they plan to work on many of the same issues.
Wildcat: Why did you initially decide to campaign together?
Quintero: We worked together all year in ASA (Arizona Students Association) and realized that a lot of our ideas were on the same page. It's funny because a lot of people after the campaign - even our friends - get us confused now.
Chang: We were not sure at first if we were going to (campaign together) but it worked because our friendship makes it easier to tell each other when one of us thinks the other is wrong.
Wildcat: How do you think your friendship will affect how you work together next year?
Quintero: We both want to work on club funding. We realized (during) the campaign that we work well together. I think, because we know each other, not so many things will be separate.
Chang: Although our areas are different, Ray is going to work more at the state level and I am going to work with clubs and organizations on campus. We want to collaborate on the things we can.
Wildcat: What do you hope to change from this year's administration?
Quintero: Both Sam and I want to bring forth a friendlier, happier side of ASUA. One thing we want to do is more visits to clubs and organizations to find out what they need. We will also use events such as CatFest to inform students of what we are doing. If students say they want more on-campus concerts, we would work on bringing more bands in.
Chang: We want to be pro-active and survey more students to find out their interests. We will use the Collaborations Board and the President's Club to help us. I also want to work with the treasurer to bring in more corporate sponsors for clubs and services such as Safe Ride.
Wildcat: How do you plan on using the PULSE team?
Quintero: We want to get the Senate more involved with the PULSE team. It is their role to serve the students, so they should get out on to campus to find out what students want.
Chang: During the campaign, I asked some students if they knew about any programs ASUA had done, and a lot of them didn't. We want to be more visible, so students will know what our programs are.
