UA, Dorn outplay Billikens on Friday, lose Saturday

The Arizona Icecats split a two-game series with St. Louis University this past weekend, winning Friday's game 5-2 and dropping Saturday's game 2-1. The Icecats - Arizona's club hockey team - started the season ranked No. 5 in the American Collegiate Hockey Association.

In Friday night's game, the Icecats were trailing the No. 14 Billikens 2-1 when UA freshman Joe Boysen netted a game-tying goal in the second period.

Ed Carfora scored on a power play eight minutes into the third period to put the Icecats ahead, 3-2.

Carfora's goal was all the offensive output the Icecats needed.

Goals by senior forward Paul Dorn and freshman Billy Veasey capped off the Icecats win, and the team prevailed, 5-2. In the game, the Icecats outshot the Billikens 59-16.

In Saturday's game, the Icecats and Billikens were tied 1-1 with 1:20 left in the third period when the St. Louis player scored the go-ahead goal.

Head coach Leo Golembiewski's attempt to pull goaltender Jason Morgan in the game's waning moments failed, and the Wildcats lost, 2-1.

While UA outshot the Billikens again, 40-30, Golembiewski was not happy with certain aspects of the game.

"We just didn't have as sharp of shooting as we could have" Golembiewski said. "We just couldn't put the biscuit in the basket."

Icecat players were disappointed with the loss.

"It's definitely disappointing to lose to a team we should have beat," freshman goaltender Brian Schilling said. "We need a little more heart (and) a little more desire to get it done."

Junior Tom Wood thought the Icecats played well, but they couldn't pull out a victory.

"I thought we really outplayed them" he said. "I thought our defense played well."

Despite the loss, Golembiewski saw some positives on the ice.

"The guys never quit, never gave up, just kept on working" he said. "(Junior goaltender Jason Morgan) did a good job in the net. He was solid."

Dorn and Boysen each had three points over the two games. Dorn had two goals and one assist, while Boysen, a true freshman, added a goal and two assists.

The Icecats return to the Tucson Convention Center this Friday and Saturday for a pair of games against University of Colorado.

Schilling believes the Icecats have a lot to work on during practice leading up to the games against the Buffaloes.

"In practice this week we need to work more on execution," he said. "We need to work a little harder."
