ZBT removes two members involved in attack

UAPD says no arrests have been made

Two members were expelled from the Zeta Beta Tau fraternity Sunday night in relation to an incident that happened during the early morning of Nov. 1.

About 15 people attacked one UA student in front of Manzanita-Mohave Residence Hall, 1000 N. Park Ave., chasing him up East First Avenue and beating him on the steps of the dorm. The group also took his backpack, which was later found in an alley near North Tyndall Avenue and First Avenue.

The victim and witnesses suspected that the attackers were ZBT members.

"It did come out that two guys were involved, and they're no longer in our house anymore," said Jason Chlowitz, ZBT president and a communication junior.

Chlowitz said he found out through other members of the fraternity, and the two members did admit their involvement to him. He then turned them in to the University of Arizona Police Department. UAPD has not arrested anyone so far, according to Sgt. Mike Smith, public information officer.

"I was infuriated about it from the beginning," Chlowitz said. "If I find out more people are involved, they will be expelled too."

The 31-year-old man, whose name is being withheld by the Arizona Daily Wildcat, was on his way to buy coffee around East Speedway Boulevard and Park Avenue when he stopped in front of the ZBT fraternity house, 1011 N. Tyndall Ave. ZBT, which has about 110 members, threw a Halloween party on the night of Oct. 31. There was security at the party until 1 a.m.

The student said he was somewhat intoxicated after having six beers that morning, but that he wasn't threatening to anyone.

"We're not part of it anymore - now it's up to detectives to deal with," Chlowitz said.
