Patricia Hasselmo, wife of former UA Provost Nils Hasselmo, died on Dec. 30 in Minneapolis. She was 70.
Hasselmo suffered from multiple myeloma, a form of cancer characterized by the overgrowth and malfunction of plasma cells in the bone marrow. The disease represents 1 percent of all cancers, according to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation.
Hasselmo was active in her church, serving on a national body of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America. She also worked with the University of Arizona faculty women's association.
Although they no longer resided in Tucson, the Hasselmos maintained a home in the city.
Husband Nils Hasselmo was UA provost from 1983 through 1988. He left Tucson to become president of the University of Minnesota, a post he held until 1997. He currently heads the Association of American Universities, an organization of research universities which the UA belongs to.
Other survivors include sons Peter and Michael, daughter Anna Williams, and six grandchildren.
Donations in Hasselmo's memory may be made to the UA, especially the College of Humanities.
