Softball Notes: The on-deck circle

Evans gets her due: In a ceremony before Sunday's game against UCLA, the Arizona softball program will retire former UA star and current assistant coach Nancy Evans' jersey.

Evans, the 1998 National Player of the Year, will also throw out the first pitch at the 1:00 p.m. matchup at Hillenbrand Stadium.

Closing in on Evans: The program should save current pitcher Jennie Finch's jersey a spot on the outfield wall.

On Friday, the senior picked up her 104th career victory, moving her into sole possession of second place on UA's all-time victory list.

Finch passed Carrie Dolan (1994-1997) and Becky Lemke (1998-2001) in taking her place near the top of yet another school record.

She trails current UA assistant coach and former Honda Player of the Year Nancy Evans by 20 wins for most victories all-time.

Back, back, back, gone: Sophomore first baseman/designated player Leneah Manuma's 17th home run of the year on Saturday gave her 36 career home runs in just over one-and-a-half seasons.

She is currently seventh place on the school's all-time list and is averaging .46 home runs per game. That pace would give her 27 home runs at the end of the regular season, putting her in sixth place all-time.

In addition, she would be over halfway to the school record of 85 held by Leah Bratz (1994-1998) and Laura Espinoza (1992-1995).

Best in the west: As a team, Arizona has hit 67 home runs this year for an average of 1.8 home runs per game. The next closest team in the Pacific 10 Conference is Washington with 35.

Oregon State has the fewest home runs as a team with 13.

That number is just two more than the number of grand slams the Wildcats have this season.

State pride: With its two victories over Arizona State this past weekend, Arizona is now 11-1 since 1999 in conference play against its intrastate rivals. In those 12 games, the Wildcats have outscored the Sun Devils 53-11.

The last time Arizona State beat Arizona in conference play was April 21, 2000 in a 3-1 victory in Tempe. That loss also happens to be the last time Jennie Finch lost a game.

Running it up: Arizona has outscored its opponents 264-41 in its first 37 ballgames this year for an average final score of 7.1-1.1.

In addition, Arizona has scored 208 runs in the first four innings, meaning 5.6 of its 7.1 average runs have come early in the game.

Big time coverage: Saturday's game against No. 1 UCLA will be televised regionally on Fox Sports Net at 2 p.m. MST.

The game was originally scheduled for 7 p.m. but was moved to accommodate the television lineup. Both teams have identical overall records of 33-4.
