The Arizona gymnastics team had even more to celebrate this week. After their record-setting performance at the Pacific 10 Conference Championships over the weekend, four Gymcats were named to the 2002 Pac-10 All-Conference team yesterday.
After setting a new school record with a total score of 197.050 and finishing second at the Pac-10 championships, all-conference competitors Randi Liljenquist, Andi McCabe, Katie Johnson and Monica Bisordi are poised to lead the Wildcats deep into the postseason, with hopes for a berth to the national championships hinging on their performance at this weekend's regional battle.
Liljenquist, a senior from Canyon del Oro High School in Tucson, earned all-conference honors in the all-around and floor exercise. She currently ranks third nationally on the floor, No. 9 in the all-around competition, No. 12 on the vault and No. 13 on the beam. Liljenquist also earned all-conference honors in two events following a stellar sophomore campaign in 2000, along with being named a first team All-American that year as well. During the season, Liljenquist has earned 51 top-five finishes to go along with 18 individual titles. This season, Liljenquist set career highs with perfect scores (10.000) on the floor and beam and by scoring a 39.775 in the all-around, with all three marks setting new school records.
McCabe, a sophomore hailing from Bensenville, Ill. earned all-conference honors on the vault. She currently ranks fourth nationally in the event and has earned 14 top-five finishes and six individual titles this season.
Bisordi, a freshman and native of San Mateo, Calif. is currently ranked No. 16 on the beam and No. 20 on the vault, helping her to earn all-conference honors on the beam and in the all-around competition. She captured two all-around titles and two beam titles during the season to go along with 31 top-five finishes.
Johnson, a freshman from Moorhead, Minn. was named Pac-10 gymnast of the week (Jan. 29) for her performance against UCLA, along with earning Pac-10 Freshman of the Year honors over the weekend. Johnson was named to the all-conference team for her work on the floor exercise, where she currently holds a No. 4 ranking nationally. Johnson has 21 top-five finishes to go along with four individual titles on the floor.
"I think it's great that we have four all-conference athletes in such a highly competitive conference," head Coach Bill Ryden said. "When so few people can attain the honor because of the incredible competition (in the Pac-10), it's a very difficult thing to do. It's definitely a feather in the cap for our program."
Five Pac-10 teams, including Arizona, were ranked in the Top 20 nationally to round out the regular season, with UCLA leading the way with the No. 1 ranking overall.
The No. 12 Gymcats will square off in the NCAA South Central Regional Championship meet against No. 1 UCLA, No. 17 Brigham Young, No. 18 Arizona State, California State Fullerton and Illinois-Chicago on Saturday in Tempe. The top two teams at the regional meet will advance to the NCAA Championships in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The regional championship meet is hosted by ASU and will take place on their campus at Wells Fargo Arena at 6 p.m.
