More hardware for Walton
A day after Sporting News honored Luke Walton as a second team All-American, Basketball News honored not just Walton but freshman guard Salim Stoudamire as well.
Walton was named to Basketball News' All-America second team, while Stoudamire was chosen as a second-team All-Freshman.
Stoudamire, a 6-foot-1 guard from Portland, Ore., averaged 12.8 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 34 games. In Stoudamire's first season, he proved to be a versatile weapon in a conference loaded with talent at the guard position.
Stoudamire led the conference in free-throw shooting (.904) and ranked third in 3-point field goal percentage (.453). During the season, Stoudamire hit 73 3-pointers, good enough for ninth on Arizona's single-season 3-point field goals list. His .453 percentage from behind the arc is the school's second-highest career percentage.
Stoudamire scored in double figures in 22 games this season, including a career-high 29 points against Southern California in the Pac-10 Tournament championship game on March 9. The Pacific 10 Conference Freshman of the Year scored 423 points, which is the seventh-highest freshman total in Arizona history.
For Walton, yesterday's honor is one of many postseason awards the junior has received. Walton also earned All-America acknowledgements from the John R. Wooden Award, Basketball Times (third team), The Sporting News (second team) and collegehoopsinsider.com.
Walton averaged 15.7 points, 7.3 rebounds and a Pac-10 Conference-leading 6.3 assists in 31 games this season and was named the Pac-10 Tournament Most Outstanding Player.
