Spring training's over and the Sidewinders haven't started yet, so the only baseball ticket in town is of the alcohol-free variety. Damn. The softball team plays UCLA and gets to be on TV. What does the baseball team get when it welcome last year's CWS runner-up? AM radio. Tune in to hear drunken Wildcatters heckling the Cardinal.
Stanford sweeps, 3-0
If you're debating whether to attend the spring game or watch the softball team, here's my advice. Just go sit in the north stands at Arizona Stadium, and odds are Leneah Manuma will drop you a couple home-run balls as souvenirs. I wouldn't want anybody to miss John Mackovic getting knocked over like he did yesterday at practice.
Arizona 2 UCLA 0

Washington AD Barbara Hedges rejected my application to coach UW men's basketball in favor of a guy from Saint Louis. What about St.Germain? Screw that - the UA women's tennis team is going to make the Husky women (no pun intended) pay. Just FYI, UA star Maja Mlakar's first name is pronounced "Maya."
Arizona wins

What the hell is with men's tennis rankings? We're supposed to include rankings in stories even if we're talking about the Nos. 63 and 34 teams in the nation. Is it really that big of an accomplishment to be the 63rd-best DI tennis team? By the way, there is no better place on campus to crank call than the Robson Tennis Center office.
No. 34 Washington wins

I love Lorena Ochoa. If it weren't for her, the LPGA wouldn't have sent the Wildcat a 300-page media guide, and then I'd have nothing to prop up my office window with. Plus, the poor girl has turned down at least $40,000 in tour earnings so she could stay at UA. Of course she's going to win. UA senior Cathie Williamson from Shelby, Mont., takes second.
Ochoa wins by 12 strokes

Here is some advice if you plan on going to Sancet this weekend - bring a flask. Actually, bring two because this series could get ugly. Andy Lopez has done some good things for the program this year, but he hasn't had enough time to chalk up a series win against Stanford. Marc Kaiser will salvage the series with a win Sunday.
Stanford 2 UA 1

Way to go, UA athletic department. Way to schedule the biggest softball game of the season at the exact same time as the spring game. Could this have been planned any worse? Let me tell you this, if I were you, I would skip the spring game and go watch Jennie Finch. She looks much better in those tight pants anyway.
UA 2-0

Barbara Hedges is not a women's tennis player at Washington, but she might as well be. She has been smashed around Seattle as bad as the UA women's tennis team has been in the Pac-10. Hedges, the UW athletic director, finally got her man in Lorenzo Romar, but UA will not get a win against the Huskies.
Washington over Arizona

Whi Kim has become one of my favorite UA athletes in such as short time. Not only is the sophomore one of the best players on the team, but he can also write. Kim wants a job here at the Wildcat next semester. Does anyone else think there might be a little conflict of interest in that?
Arizona wins

If I were Lorena Ochoa, which I'm sorry I cannot say I am, I would have peaced out on UA a long time ago and hooked onto the LPGA tour. She could be making bank right now but instead still has to "play" against amateur athletes. Lorena could pull a Tin Cup on the competition and use gardening equipment and still win. A sports movie classic.

Obviously shaken by the departure of Casey Jacobsen to the NBA (possibly), the Cardinal will not be focused enough to sweep the Wildcats at home. It might be far-fetched, but you never know. If things get ugly on the hill, coach Lopez can always borrow Jennie Finch to mow down the Cardinal.
Arizona two games, Stanford one

It was surely fate that I decided to have a sandwich from On Deck Deli just hours before I was called upon by my editor to do staff picks. Of course Arizona is going to win. Let's do some math: First of all, the Wildcats are playing at home. Spot Arizona 5. Jennie Finch is playing. That's another 5. Do I even need to say more?
Arizona 2-0

Hmm ... tennis. Not sure what I can bring to this one. At least I am not a news reporter though, right? The conference schedule hasn't been very kind thus far for the ladies' tennis team, but a nice upset will get things moving in the right direction.
Arizona

It's been a rough couple of weeks for the men's team, but what better time than the present to break out of a funk, right? Plus we've got a Capriati on the team, too. Yes it will be a fine home showing for the Wildcats as they pull off the four-sport sweep.
Arizona

Ochoa is riding a six-tournament win streak. Happy Gilmore couldn't even touch her. The only way the Sun Devils and the other golfers would have a chance is if she could play with only a putter and a driver, or if she was taking me on at mini golf at Funtasticks. But neither will be happening, and she will keep her streak going.
Ochoa 1st

Sunday is official "BROOM DAY" at Sancet. Stanford will sweep in Tucson but not without a little resistance. 'Zona has the tools but is still a year away from making serious noise in the Pac-10. Lopez likes to play "little-ball" and push a few runs past Stanford's pitching depth, but it won't be enough to pull one out this weekend.
Stanford sweeps

Game of the year - Does ANYBODY hit the ball harder than super-soph Leneah Manuma? (insert cheap plug here) Jason Gardner, please stay for one more year, and you too Leneah … Major League Baseball can wait. Finch may not lose again this year but might struggle to win another Honda P.O.Y. award, this time against her teammate.
Arizona-7, UCLA-2
(Manuma-2 home runs)

Head Coach Vicki Maes has quite the international connection with her squad - Maja (My-Ya) Mlakar of Slovenia, Debbie Larocque of Canada and Dianna Hollands of New Zealand give the Wildcats enough depth to claw past the Huskies. Jeu - Positionnement - Allumette. That's French, for game - set - match.
Wildcats upset Washington

The Men's tennis team won't fare as well as the ladies against U-Dub. Capriati has kept his ranking, but the team can't play consistently enough or hold on long enough during the matches to pull out many wins. A demoralizing sweep against the So Cal schools last weekend will show that the end of the season is closer than we think.
Washington over Arizona

With all this talk about leaving early, we really should be worried that the best female athlete in the history of Arizona Athletics might bolt for the greens ($$$) of the LPGA tour, rather than stick around here in Tucson. Ochoa will win again this weekend, like usual, but 'Zona might be the actual losers at the end of the season.
Ochoa 1st
