Two masks used in the "Phantom of the Opera" production were stolen from Centennial Hall early this week, police reports stated.
The masks, valued at $950, were stolen from backstage at Centennial Hall, 1020 E. University Blvd., between 10:15 p.m. Sunday and 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Ed Brown, director of communications for UApresents, said the masks will be replaced by the beginning of next week, and in the meantime, costume designers have made temporary masks to "substitute" the stolen ones.
Frances Fehr, the wardrobe supervisor for the production, discovered on Tuesday afternoon that the masks were stolen.
The masks were for two different characters, Brown said. The "Andre" mask, which is valued at $500 and resembles the top portion of a skull, was torn from its headpiece.
The "Swing" mask, valued at $450, covers only the eyes and has long eyelashes.
University of Arizona Police Department Sgt. Mike Smith said the masks were small enough to be concealed.
Brown said security has been bumped up since the incident, and he added that thefts are not common at Centennial.
UAPD reports state that the exterior doors to the building may have been left open, and Brown said anyone with a university master key could have accessed the building.
He said he could not foresee anyone selling the stolen masks right away because of their prominence.
He added, however, that the value of the masks is not based on how much collectors might pay but on the price of making the masks.
There are no suspects, Smith said.
"Phantom of the Opera" will run at Centennial Hall until May 4.
