33 essential first-year items · and where to get them

After a long day of unpacking, you wave good-bye to your parents as they drive away from your residence hall in their empty car.

Squinting to keep the sun out of your eyes, you wish you had a nice pair of sunglasses to keep the glare out.

Oops, you forgot your shades at home.

Now on your own for the first time ever, you begin to realize that you are lacking some necessities that you never thought you might need at college.

Michael Miller, president of the Residence Hall Association, thinks the thing college students forget the most is class.

That and cookware.

ćI was so used to having a kitchen-worth of pots and pans at my disposal that I forgot I might need a microwave bowl, basic silverware and the like,ä Miller said.

For the convenience of students, most pots and pans are available at the front desk of each residence hall for checkout.

For other items that are not stored at the front desk of your dorm, we can help.

This guide will direct you to stores and services where you can get what you need while you get acquainted with Tucson and UA.

Most destinations are within walking distance, and a few others can be reached by bus or shuttle.

A courtesy shuttle will be available to students Saturday, Aug. 24, from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 25, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. to transport students to locations further away from campus, like Target and Park Place Mall.

The shuttle, part of Wildcat Welcome 2002, will leave from Park Student Union and the flagpole at Old Main every half hour.
