Academic advising means multiple appointments

After applying to colleges, deciding on UA and completing freshman orientation, students might think their academic path is clearly plotted out.

However, thereâs a lot more planning ahead when it comes to choosing a major, fulfilling graduation requirements and taking the required number of general education courses.

Students who want advice on their academic plans need to visit an adviser ÷ or advisers.

Finding an adviser that is able to answer every advising question at UA is most likely not going to happen, said Leticia Delgadillo, interim associate director of the Freshman Year Center.

A student will usually have an adviser or counselor for each program in which they participate in, whether it be in the Honors College ÷ an athletic team or the Disability Resource Center, which means students can have a limitless number of advisers.

The Freshman Year Center, located in the Integrated Learning Center, offers students advising for their general education requirements. The center focuses on advising students in four different colleges: the College of Science, the College of Humanities, the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences and University College.

Even though the Freshman Year Center focuses its attention on freshmen in these four colleges, students looking for advice would never be turned away from assistance.

ãWe really want to be a one-stop shop. Itâs too hot out there to be running all around,ä Delgadillo said.

Students with sophomore standing ÷ those who have earned 25 units or more ÷ in these four colleges should see an adviser in the Office of Academic Services, Modern Languages building, Room 347, for advising assistance regarding general education.

Students must also visit their college and department for advising geared toward their major and minor.

Each college provides an informational lecture during freshman orientation to assist students in planning out their next four years.

The Electrical and Computer Engineering Department holds another orientation meeting put on by James Boyless, an academic advising coordinator, who alone advises more than 800 students every semester.

ãDr. Boyless talks about time management for freshman who are here and want to party all the time, this is really crucial because this is one of the tougher colleges,ä said Laurie Laine, Electrical and Computer Engineering administrative assistant.

With so many students to keep track of, Boyless keeps a sign-up sheet on his door where students can sign up for an advising appointment for the following week.

Monica Ramirez, an ecology and evolutionary biology and photography senior, recommends sorting out as many resources on campus as possible.

ãThe campus seems really big, but if you keep track of all the awesome people on campus, like the professors and researchers, it will really help you out,ä she said.

The Freshman Year Center also offers the Advising Center for Exploratory Students (A.C.E.S.), which offers students assistance in exploring majors and examining career options.

ãStudents are welcome to call or walk in and make an appointment. This is really the place to get help,ä said Mark Kolb, advising specialist. ãWe are here to help everyone, not just freshmen, to make sure students get where they are supposed to be.ä
