Students can get help moving in, get directions to class and be welcomed to the UA during the opening week celebration
Campus is set to come alive again this fall during Wildcat Welcome 2002 ÷ or more than a week of food, fun and fiestas planned to help UA freshman get acquainted with their new alma mater.
Need help lifting that suitcase?
University faculty, staff, administrators and student club leaders will be on hand Aug. 21 and Aug. 22, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. to provide assistance to students moving into the halls. If some of those boxes are too heavy to carry, or if you need any other sort of moving assistance, flag down one of the people in the ćArizona Redä shirts.
Need Directions? Should you get lost mid-day on the first day of class, donāt worry. Volunteers will be situated at various locations across campus to provide directions, maps or answers to general questions. The volunteers will be out from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 21 to Aug. 23, and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Aug. 24, and 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Aug. 26 and Aug. 27.
Thereās a barbecue on Aug. 23 at Bear Down Gym from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The cost is $5 for students and $10 for others. Students can register online at https://www.union.arizona.edu/cgi-bin/WebObjects/WildcatWelcome.woa/.
Students who live off campus and commute are invited to stop by the commuter tent on the UA Mall, outside Old Main, Aug. 25 from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Commuter Assistants ÷ who are like RAs, but for those living off campus ÷ will be on hand to offer ice cream, answer questions and provide resources and information about on and off campus life.
All members of the Class of 2006 are invited to attend Freshmen Convocation, the formal university induction ceremony traditionally held the evening before the first day of classes. The ceremony will be held in McKale Center on Aug. 25 at 6 p.m.
Representatives from the 38 sports clubs on campus will convene at the Student Recreation Center, 1400 E. Sixth St., on Aug. 26 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. to answer questions and provide information. There will also be games and contests to participate in. The first 400 people will receive a special door prize.
Canāt stand your roommateās poster of Elvis? Look for some alternative dcor at the University Activity Boardās Back to School Poster Sale on the Mall. The sale will run Aug. 27 to Aug. 30, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Free massages and live entertainment, among other services, will be provided at the Community Day Open House on the Mall on Aug. 27 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Representatives from various organizations and businesses from the Tucson and the UA community will attend. There will be free Eegees from noon to 1 p.m.
Cool down with some free ice cream on the Mall outside Bear Down Gym on Aug. 29 from noon to 1 p.m. Students can have as much ice cream as they can eat.
UABās Comedy Corner Improv Show is Aug. 29 at 7:30 p.m. in the Park Student Union. Come enjoy the campus tradition of UAB Comedy Corner improvisational humor. Content may contain adult themes and material.
Associated Students of the University of Arizona (ASUA) and UAB invite students to attend the fall 2002 CATFEST on Aug. 30. Events start at 6 p.m. on the Mall, leading to a free concert inside Centennial Hall. The name of the band had not been released as of Tuesday. For more information, call ASUA at 621-ASUA.
The UA Foundation will be holding a ćFreshmen Sizzle on the Mallä on Aug. 31 at 5 p.m. to celebrate the beginning of the school year and the first home football game of the season.
