ASUA Unveils UA Club Olympics

By James Maxwell

Clubs will vie in athletic and talent competitions

Campus club representatives will test their athletic ability later this semester at the very first UA Club Olympics.

The games, scheduled for April 8-10 in correlation with Spring Fling, will pit various University of Arizona clubs against each other in events including sumo wrestling, jousting, an obstacle course and talent show.

Associated Students of the University of Arizona Sen. Jennifer Reece is organizing the event and said it is aimed at promoting campus morale among clubs.

"It is something fun for clubs to compete in and promote more unity on campus," she said.

Kelly Swiryn, president of the Ultimate Frisbee Club, said the Club Olympics are a good opportunity to bring all the university's clubs together in one event.

"It seems like a good idea because a lot of clubs work independently and have separate events," he said.

Dwight Maloney III, president of the Business and Public Administration Student Council, said he hopes the event will help improve communication between his club and similar organizations across campus.

"There is no real good medium for communication with different college councils, so it could be a good way for people to meet," he said.

Letters are being sent to all club presidents inviting them to participate in the events.

"If we get at least 10 clubs to participate in our first year, then hopefully it can become a tradition," Reece said.

Reece said students not involved with a club are welcome to come and may even find an organizaton with which they would like to get involved.

She said the olympics will allow all clubs involved to recruit more members.

"This gives clubs a chance to display themselves on campus and show what they can do," she said.

For more information, clubs interested in participating can e-mail Jennifer Reece at jreece@u.arizona.edu.
