Wind and tennis is not usually a good combination.

However, the UA men's tennis team was able to overcome the strong winds yesterday to defeat Northern Arizona and University of California Santa Barbara.

The No. 41 Wildcats shut out NAU 7-0 and they dominated No. 74 Santa Barbara 5-2 to improve their record to 4-0 on the season.

UA head coach Bill Wright said Sunday's victory over the Gauchos was an impressive win as the Wildcats were able to overcome tough weather conditions to handily defeat Santa Barbara.

"We played really well (yesterday)," Wright said. "To be able to beat a good team with these winds was good for us. Not to knock NAU, but we played OK against them, but we played really well against Santa Barbara."

The Wildcats won all but two singles matches against the Gauchos.

UA senior Steven Capriati, the top-ranked player for the Wildcats, dropped his first match of the year against Carlos Palencia 5-7, 3-6.

Capriati's loss was the only low point for Arizona on the afternoon.

Going into the weekend, Wright said he was unhappy with the play in UA's doubles matches, but that all changed.

All three Wildcat doubles teams were victorious against the Gauchos and senior Brian Jackson said that it helped UA get off to a quick start.

"Our doubles play is getting better," Jackson said. "We were able to get out to a quick start and jump on the (Gauchos) early. It really helped us throughout the match."

With two matches left before Pacific 10 Conference play begins, Wright said the team is exactly where it needs to be.

"We are right on track," Wright said. "We are getting better and we have two more matches to improve before it really starts to get serious. We are working really hard to get better and I could not be any happier."
