Softball Notes: The on-deck circle

Deja vu: Arizona rarely drops games to unranked opponents, but this past weekend's Fiesta Bowl Tournament wasn't the first time the Wildcats have struggled with unranked opponents.

In last year's Kia Classic in Fullerton, Calif., Arizona dropped a pair of games to unranked teams.

However, Arizona would turn it around after that, as they would only lose two more games the rest of the year.

Glad to meet you: That's what opposing players are saying about Arizona sophomore pitcher Jenny Gladding.

Gladding has given up 16 runs this year in four starts after allowing 18 all of last year.

In addition she's lost as many games - two - as she did all of last season.

Power hitters seem to like her too, as opposing batters have tagged her for five long balls.

Not worthy: The Rose Mofford Sports Complex where the Fiesta Bowl Tournament was held proved to be unworthy of the level of players on its fields.

The complex, normally used for slow-pitch softball leagues, had dead grass and also had to be converted into collegiate size fields by placing temporary PVC fencing for the outfield wall.

Outfielders racing back on home run balls found themselves going through the fence in what could have been an injury-producing situation.

More facility troubles: Both of Arizona's Saturday games were delayed as a result of problems with the pitching circle.

The day's first game saw a near 30-minute delay as groundskeepers had to fill in a soft hole near the pitcher's foot with special dirt designed to harden when moistened with water.

The dirt worked until the second inning of game two when there was yet another delay.

This time it was because the dirt had hardened into a cement-like mixture. Groundskeepers were again called but failed to show up, meaning that Arizona senior Jennie Finch had to use her cleats to chew up the dirt for her teammate Jenny Gladding.

Mac attack quiet: UA's all-time freshman home run leader Mackenzie Vandergeest got her sophomore season off to a quick start in her first game of the year against Alabama.

The catcher hit a grand slam in that game but has since cooled off.

She is just 6-for-25 since that time and has yet to hit another long ball.

The new thing: Sunday's loss to Wisconsin saw a first for senior Jennie Finch.

The decorated pitcher made her first career start at third base for the Wildcats.

She did a perfect job, successfully completing all of her fielding chances including one spectacular throw to first on a bunt.

The old thing: One thing that hasn't changed is Finch's ability to master opposing hitters.

She has 52 strikeouts in five starts. Her 10.4 strikeouts a game puts her on a pace that could see her fan 400 before the end of the year.

The all-time UA record for strikeouts in a season is held by Becky Lemke who struck out 314 batters during the 2000 season.

Fielding woes: The stellar defense of a year ago has yet to make its way out of hibernation for this year's squad.

In nine games Arizona has committed nine errors after making just 34 blunders in 69 contests last season.
